Guitar help/questions

I highly suggest NOT learning on a low-grade guitar. The notes will never be accurate, and it will likely go out of tune quickly while practicing.
If you choose to stick with practicing, your sense of notes and corresponding sounds will be skewed.. Not saying you cannot learn, but i would urge you to do it right.

Long & Macquade has some great ones for cheap, or you can look for used ones on Kijiji. Spend a few bucks and get a proper one.

Just my opinion.

The neck can be warped, frets mis-aligned, To high or low a bridge, string spacing, never mind the poor sound. All add to frustration.
I would think the first thing you would want to do is decide on the type of music you want to play.

It's easier to learn on an electric supposedly. Action's lower.
Electric's also good if you live in an apartment or a townhouse. You can just slap some headphones on and not bother anyone.

You can buy a starter Epiphone (made by Gibson) or a Squier (made by Fender) for around $100-200.

I've done some research and the Epiphone Les Paul Special II seems to be widely recognized as one of the best cheap guitars.
Its pickups don't have as much strength as higher end models and I had to put a spacer (paper) underneath the bridge because the strings were touching the frets but it's got a really nice sound.

I would disagree with the last point. I think sometimes you don't know what kind of music you want to play until you start playing it. When I picked up guitar I thought I'd be playing a lot of pop and rock. I find myself drawn to playing jazz, blues, and even a little country - music that I don't typically listen to a whole lot, but I find much more interesting to play. Playing an instrument can open up new interests.

The first thing you want to do is tune that guitar and start playing something.

I had this guitar for a few years. It's definitely a good bang for your buck, and most shops will throw in some kind of package deal to include a small amp.

But if you want to keep things simple, start on an acoustic. Build up those calluses and strengthen that left hand, and when you do move on to an electric it'll feel like a breeze in comparison.

I honestly wouldn't really look at Fender or Gibson for a "cheap electric" (espeically Fender). I'd look at brands like ESP (LTD), Ibanez, Godin, ......even Washburn. I've played some some Low-Mid range ESP's and Ibanez guitars I liked but all the Squires seem like junk to me.

....or you can always buy my Washburn WG780 ;););)

Just for the hell of it I picked this up recently at Costco for $169. The game is actually pretty cool for learning, especially some of the mini-games. It was a little frustrating at first, but once I started getting into it I started getting the feel back. And the game without the guitar is $69, so for $100 you get a basic, decent electric guitar. Kinda surprised at the guitar actually, it's a lot better than I expected. Nowhere near my Ibanez 540SCT6 but more than decent to learn on.

I think I'm actually going to pick up a second cable for the game so I can try the 2 player.

This sounds like something I'd actually try seeing as I have a PS3 and 4 guitars already....minus the guitar of course.

That's on my Christmas wish list, actually. I've heard from a buddy that it is actually quite good and will actually make your guitar playing better.

Lunatic - so in your opinion, the game is worth the money?
I already have the ELP Special II so don't really need the ELP Junior, one beginner guitar is enough.
I was considering taking lessons but never seem to get around to it. Maybe that game can get me started?

I'm enjoying it, but naturally your mileage may vary. I do find that the mini-games are really useful for stuff like scales and chords. Also, the game by its nature really forces you to learn to not look at the neck since you have to be looking at the screen to see what you're supposed to be playing.

I did find it frustrating the first few times I played until I got used to the interface and also got the audio sorted out. I needed to get a special ($6) cable to split the audio off so I could use analog audio and HDMI for video. But I am now definitely enjoying it. Looking forward to some upcoming metal DLC, including 3 Megadeth tracks :)

Only drawback is that my main guitar is always tuned to D standard......might have to use my other axe that's tuned to E

It actually has a bunch of songs in drop-D tuning. Since I now have 2 guitars I'm probably going to leave my Ibanez in standard and the Les Paul Jr. in Drop-D.

Guitarsmith is now on my wish list! Thanks guys, I didn't want a single thing until I saw this!!
I need to get my fingers moving around better, and I think this will get me to loosen up a bit... Plus it's an excuse to buy an electric... Now I gotta find what one!

I just ordered a beginner package from Long & Mcquade. Played a lot of piano and trumpet as a kid, always wanted to try out the guitar. This thread gave me the last push I needed.

OP - lol'd at point 4 on your wish list

D standard son (1 step down)

DROP D is for sissies ;)

I've got my two main electrics set up with different gauge strings for different tunings and they have floating bridges so they don't like being messed with. Drop D from E is doable but going from D to E is pretty much a full restring + more setup.

Yeah, yeah, I know... I was more commenting on the fact that the game did have alternate tunings.

I put a Tremel-no in my Ibanez to lock down the bridge when I want. I don't really need the bar much so I usually leave it locked, but can unlock it easily when I want to.

Werd. I like the floyd but I really should get rid of one of the guitars and get a fixed bridge gutiar. I've wanted one of these for a long time:
