The GST/HST holiday will start on Dec. 14 and run through Feb. 15, 2025.

People will be able to buy the following goods GST-free:
  • Prepared foods, including vegetable trays, pre-made meals and salads, and sandwiches.
  • Restaurant meals, whether dine-in, takeout or delivery.
  • Snacks, including chips, candy and granola bars.
  • Beer, wine, cider and pre-mixed alcoholic beverages below 7 per cent alcohol by volume (ABV).
  • Children's clothing and footwear, car seats and diapers.
  • Children's toys, such as board games, dolls and video game consoles.
  • Books, print newspapers and puzzles for all ages.
  • Christmas trees.
EDIT: Now it's official. Some of the details may have changed, though:

"Bill C-78, the legislation implementing the tax break, passed its third and final vote in the Senate and received royal assent on Thursday."

I'm sure businesses love this having to figure out how to temporarily remove the tax and not remit it and then put it back on again sounds like a lot of fun

Isn't a motorcycle a puzzle for adults ("puzzles for all ages")? Who decides how to classify products sold?

I think with modern POS systems this should be easy to do. All done by head office.

Beer, videogames, and snacks? AND they're sending me a cheque to pay for it? Oh boy. I'll bet the call from EKOS Research comes on the same day the cheque does

Unless your one of the 35,000 small business in the GTA with no head office , then your reprogramming the POS system . My silly YC bar will be two days figuring this crap out .
I suspect many businesses will choose to eat the 5% as it's easier to offer a 5% discount than fiddle with POS twice. The accounting for that would be interesting though. Probably just kicking the problem down the road.

I imagine the problem is how often does one reprogram the POS, so each time it is like figuring it out for the first time...

Maybe a good short-term side hustle, figure out a few of the top systems and offer it as a service to those small businesses?

I would think so too.

Some may even choose to ignore the whole discount and count on the consumer not being informed, and just play dumb and apologize if they get called on it.

Still messes up the bookkeeping. You collected GST when you weren't supposed to. I guess if you remit to government they won't care but you're dealing with idiots. I wouldn't want CRA all in my business seeing what other shortcuts I took in my accounting.

Timing is off. It doesn't make sense for Christmas, too late.

That was my initial thought - 10 days before Christmas Eve. Gotta be a pretty big procrastinator if you're waiting until then to start ALL of your shopping for the kids, AND for a Christmas tree.
I may or may not fit this category...
