Group riders - bikes with no CAT and the fumes behind

Diesel is the dirtiest most toxic fuel and the soot belching out of those tailpipes is by-no-means harmless. Diesel is responsible for most of the remaining pollution we (North America) generate.

Don't buy into the crap the media manipulates to match their never-ending quest for headlines that draw negative attention and gross examples of ignorance about diesel fuel, yet don't (couldn't even with their last breath breathing gas fumes) offer up any of the REAL and ACCURATE stats surrounding comparos of gas vs diesel. Common sense tells us that by per weight/volume of fuel burned, diesel is a vastly more efficient fuel for vehicle use. (including heavy trucks and locomotive engines, in the world where REAL work is being done as efficiently as our present tech allows.
And speaking of tech..VW has (in Europe, cuz our collective heads are up our collectives ***** over here) one of the cleanest internal combustion engines in the entire WORLD...and it ain't no gas job.. yup, she's an oil burner..

I still blame GM (back in the 70's and 80's) for the long-lasting, damaging and incredibly ignorant stance/reputation, for the lack of diesel powered car availability over here. Them... and government in all their hypocrisy, who love the tax collected (by the gallonage consumed).

I'm not sure if it's just me, but found that when I'm in longer grup rides and have bikes with no CAT converter exhaust front of me, after an hour or so I am getting serious head ache from the fumes .... I'm not a sensible person for migrane kind of things (OK - drinks are exception ;)), but want to know other ppl's experience with this. Definetly don't want to descriminate anyone riding bikes 4-5yrs or older, just courious about others' experience with this.

It's been talks about the noise level (especially if you are right behing one with the straight pipe, lol) - but not sure if this topic has been discussed yet.

You're certainly not alone in this. I usually get out front so I don't have to breath a lot of the crap exhaust. And if there happens to be any old Harleys in the group...they can really belch it out. Just two or three old Harleys are a match for one lone big block late 60's V8 muscle car.
But on the bike, if you pass me, then you earned the right for the cleanest air. That said though, I don't mind following 10 year old and newer VFR's and Gold Wings or most small displacement FE, OEM-tuned bikes.

Ya, we re-schuffled the order of riding but finally eliminated the two Harley guys from our Sunday group rides to stay healthy

The problem with most bikes with aftermarket pipes is that they are rarely tuned perfectly, and most people don't give a damn.
I hardly ever ever ride behind a rider who has his bike perfectly tuned so that it burns cleanly all the way through the rev range.

Most exhausts are not as perfect as stock.

Do any of you feel guilt for knowingly and willfully ****ing up the environment?

The environment is for p*ssies.

I have a plant at home...thats as environmental as I get.

i noticed it a bit on a ride yesterday, most of the time I like to stay up front, but i had to pull over to dig something out of my helmet and ended up at the back of the pack. Started to get a little light headed towards the end of the ride, but it cleared up once i got some fresher air.

big group ride,,...

you head ache is not from smell

most likley dehydration..
doesnt matter if its only 15 degree outside..

thanks all for posting here... thoughtfull.
Some notes ....When riding in 8+ group, usually it's good to keep a close formation, and that means you are 10-20ft away from the 2 bikes staggered in the front of you, at least one shooting the exhaust straight towards you. For shorther, or more dispersed group rides, that is not that noticible, but do it 2-3 hrs continuosly, and the love affair for the fumes might fade...

Well, I don't link the macho-ness or 'real-biker'-ness link to the love of the fumes; (for the record, I had both cat and older, non-cat exhaust bikes). When riding in group, for sure, I preffer to be behind a newer, cleaner air bikes, having the noxious ones behind (and that re-shuffle sometimes is interpreted as a desire to compete). After-market exhaust usually changes the sound, won't alter the gases significantly, since the cat still in place.
As a reference - when I'm in the carribeans, and one of those scooters pass by, the smell beats a group of 10gixers pulling in to the KC.... (gix was a random pick). I just call it evolution ... environmental, whatever...
Oh, did I mention that I smoke? LOL

I guess I'm thinking of the diesel of old. I had to laugh at a recent commercial. Shows "the good ole days. An old fashioned iron horse train spewing what looked like a chimney of soot into the air. Diesel trucks the same. Diesel has come along way though with electronic fuel pump governance.

"Bio-diesel" seems like the worst idea ever. From what I've heard from one of my brothers who works for Cat...it takes enough corn to feed a family for one year to fill one SUV one time. Think of starving people in Africa, and us over here in North America burning "food" for fuel in SUV's. It's really bizarre how this idea was even conceived.

What has Wall Street scratching their heads (and my portfolio patiently waiting), is the blatant lack of interest in Natural Gas. It's abundant in the US and Canada. We have more nat gas than the Arabs have oil. It's easily accessible. Vehicles are easily converted. And the emissions are much cleaner than that of gas or diesel. And it costs less than half to refine (the crack spread). It's starting to get some attention now, but IMO, it's the best solution to cleaning up the environment.

In the past I have pretty much consistently nodded my head in agreement with the vast majority if your posts. To be more accurate..I'd put it at probably about 65 to 80%. (that was a compliment)...but notice the past tense..
With this statement above, you have practically clean swept your past credibility. (IMO)

i had an ex that told me everytime i came over riding i would smell like the road hahaha

i dont think i have catalytic insert in my bike or any made for canada, only couple of states in us and a has that requirement.

That analogy only serves to illustrate how much corn it might take. Bio-diesel is not made by robbing Africans of their corn sustenance.

The smell of my bike or any other bike just triggers memories of thrilling weekend rides that last more than 8 hours at very fast paces. I LOVE that smell.. Its never been really bad that I couldn't handle it. Sound on the other hand can be REALLY annoying esp if you forget your plugs...

The point is, using "food" to fuel fuel guzzling SUV's in North America is kind of in bad taste when you have an entire continent of people in our world that are starving.
