Definitely a good idea to keep a paper map handy in case of a technical problem with a gps, which can happen. Though I have yet to have one.
Its definitely worth wiring to your bike battery. I cant imagine being dependent on a battery for trips. Once your bike is wired, your done, set it and forget it. .
My garmin 755 wouldn't start up one morning - and I was enroute to Quebec to visit a friend . Luckily iPhone saved me there. There was some bad code in the firmware that made the unit restart over and over again - that was summer 2009. Unfortunately Garmin's quality control and testing is very poor now days.
I have always wired my gps for bike powered riding. Really handy to have.
