Orlin - I used to change my oil, many yrs ago (still do on my bike).
My Zumo quit on me while on vacation last summer. Not being able to buy a new digitizer / screen at that time, I simply went out next day and bought a new Garmin LMT2455 at the local Target store. No Zumo's were available, or I would have not hesitated to buy another one.
As for the Zumo I have - it's touchscreen is broke / worn out, and the link you provided for everyone is EXACTLY what it needs.
I'd buy one and fix it myself, if I could be bothered. I have more GPS units than I need now though (one came as OEM in the car I just bought - it's junk compared to the Garmin - but it works), so if anyone wants to take a run at buying / fixing mine - it's here for the taking. The parts / accessories alone are probably worth at least $250 if bought separatly.

Gary, I didn't mean you bud, lol, knowing you i would've been devastated to learn that you'd pay someone change your oil. I also bet that you would have fixed your Zumo a thousand times over buying some china-direct gps wannabe :)

Sometimes (most of the time) it's just better to have the best.
Honestly - I'm sick of ebay (not their fault). I don't like to be home too much this time of yr, and to order something has become a PITA for me. I never know when I'm going to be home, or away. Example - I just found out a couple days ago I'm going to Vegas for Super Bowl weekend. If **** get's delivered, there's no one here to accept it = major PITA.
I've been putting off buying the digitizer you linked to since July. I'd rather let someone else fix it, and enjoy it - or let it sit in the closet for the next 20yrs.....lol.

Btw, I realize I might have overreacted about the chinese gps, it's probably not as bad as I thought and the people considering it or who already bought it probably don't deserve my nasty comments... so, sorry...i guess it's just one of those days when somebody ate my breakfast.

I had a Zumo 550 and then upgraded to a 660 because the 550 didn't do A2DP.

I use it every single day for music and nav, so I think it's worth it. If you buy one 2nd hand, make sure the seller has the yellow registration card (with a 15-digit serial number) and that they are willing to transfer ownership to you via the Garmin website. If they don't agree to either, chances the unit is stolen and you won't be able to get updates and register new maps on your unit.

I just checked two Garmins' I (personally) bought new. (Still have everything that came with them)
The Zumo 550 has the serial number on the box (bar - code / sticker style), and it corresponds to the same type sticker on the GPS unit. Mine is not hot. Bought it at the Jan bike show a few yrs ago from RadioWorld.
I just opened the 2455LMT & I don't see any yellow registration card?
A couple months after I bought it (July '12), I plugged it into the puter via usb, and it walked me through the registration / updates.
 
You could send out your zumo to an authorized repair facility. I know there is one in quebec that fixed my smashed screen, but I had to pay around $200 for my Garmin Montana to be fixed since it wasn't covered under warranty.

Garmin USA is way more helpful than radioworld btw...

Its running windows CE 5.0, and iGO8 navigation so all the maps of the planet are loadable. I could pull map data off my PC that I just loaded into a unit thats fresh. The unit comes licensed for iGO8.
Plenty of torrent sites for maps (for those so inclined). I'm going to see if Navionics will run, I have it set for the Raytheon 10" screen GPS I'm just setting up.
I like this stuff, but I simply have no interest in replacing a screen in a unit that's down.
 
OP I'm curious as to why a dedicated GPS when iPhones can do so much more and .99¢ gets you a wicked app that works the charm.
I just keep it in my pocket and it can hardwire to earphones or BT to the Scala and very nifty music interface as well.

Voice guidance shuts up when it's not required and handles detours and "that looks interesting" - diversions as well.

Companion app MotionXGPS has programmable routes and waypoints - all done far easier on a computer than a dedicated GPS unit allows.

I don't have an iphone. I have BB and don't plan on switching (yes the earth is flat in my world but I like BB but that's not we are talking about here there's a whole other thread on the topic too).

not if you download the maps on wifi. Uses none at all. Given much of the riding - especially in PA is out of cell range that's a needed thing. There are lots of non-iPhone apps for other smart phones. I just question forking out that much money for single use item these days.
In reality a stand-alone GPS should cost less or have more features like a significantly larger brighter screen to justify the price.

Especially since all the majors like Garmin have apps.
Some of those 7" smart phones/pads I would think would be wicked. That's the only thing I don't like about the phones and most GPS units is the small screen.

But with voice nav....hell I'd wear it on my wrist.....hmmmmm

It's so relaxing to ride knowing you'll get back on track if you go haring off some twisty road and be able to find coffee and gas - tho I know most GPS can do that now.

$149 for a full featured bright motorcycle friendly water proof unit...yeah - that would be a contender.

but $700 for this..??

If you can find a Garmin Nuvi 295w, they work quite well and should go for dirt cheap. Got mine for $95+tx brand new, barely has any ports on it (just holes for water to get in).

Have used it through TONNES of rain (6-8hr of rain straight on my trip to Chicago & back + a bunch more closer to home), a bunch of snow, the works. No bluetooth but does everything else, even has a camera and web browser :cool:

Edit: there is a few on ebay right now, $40-100

I'm all about simple, but I'm a huge fan of redundancy. I dont want to remove the gps every time i stop so my phone can go in my pocket + if my GPS goes "missing" I still have my phone. Getting caught in the rain with factory waterproofed unit vs. rain on my smartphione?

My wife is asking if a tablet with a USB port could run a movie for those long hyways drives, it seems a lot easier to leave her at home.

I can't agree more, which is why I posted the question in the first place. When I bought my playbook I downloaded a nav app for $7 that was very highly rated and supposed to be easy to use. Use on or offline, with turn by turn voice prompt that I could pair with my headset. Done right? What a load of crap. You need a degree in full retard to use it and the voice prompt never works. Makes me think all the BB haters are right.
