I'm looking for a GPS unit for my bike. Important key factors for me are being able to hear the instruction through my headset (Interphone F4) and being able to program my own routes. My headset only pairs via A2DP bluetooth so it will not pair with gps units that do not have this profile.

Keep coming back to the Garmin Zumo offerings but damn they are not cheap ranging from $400 to $700 at Radioworld. I've read many threads on here about others using regular GPS units but when I search 'gps' it is too short to get any results.

People using Zumo - is it worth the money?

People using regular units - how well do they work for you? Do you find that not being able to hear the instructions is a problem?

I bought a nuvi 13xx last year to replace my nuvi 250. Mines has bluetooth & can link with my phone. There are apps for it. However, i dont use the voice option on my nuvi, i find it rather distracting.

1) Search GPS*, search on GTAM requires a min 4 characters.

2) I use a Nuvi 550, I can program my own routes easy enough, lots of info on the net.

3) I have no issues not being able to hear the GPS, I just glance at the unit and follow that way. Besides if you miss the turn it re-calculates and still gets you to your destination.
 
I also have a 13XX model which I got brand new for 92 bucks off Amazon with lifetime maps. Now its twice as much...$186!! It perfectly adequate to use on a bike and functions with your gloves still on. I also have voice muted because I find it annoying as hell and I'm usually plugged into my music. I do pair it to my phone not so I can receive calls but so I can at least see who is calling me...

The Zumo's are nice but I'm not dropping $600 on a GPS unless I was gonna climb Mt. Everest, explore the Amazon or some crazy **** like that...
 
If you're good at repairing **** - I've got a Zumo 550 you can have for $250. Every clamp / bracket / wire etc included.
The touch screen quit working. The day it died, I bought another Garmin. The 'dead' Zumo is just sitting the original box.

^ I likey, thanks for the options. The 13XX has a large screen, can you program your own route? So when paired to your phone you can hear the directions?

I havent messed around with this feature, didnt interest me.
Yes u can program your route using Mapsource, which is free. It can also log all the places u've been & send it to your phone.

FYI, unless you go with a zumo it won't speak to your headset -- all the Nuvi models (car GPS) which have BT only supports pairing them with a phone so you can dial/answer with the GPS. If the GPS has an 3.5mm headphone jack you 'might' be able to buy a A2DP transmitter, however from what I have read most turn off when there is no audio to save battery, and that means you won't get your next GPS prompt.

Arguably I'm stuck at the point points with my Sena SMH-10 -- Right now I can either hard-wire in with an audio cable to the headset, or just go without sound/prompts. Also worth noting only the Zumo 66x supports A2DP, and the others all use HFP I believe to talk to the helmet/headset. Also the Zumo 220 charges via USB on the bike, meaning the port can be damaged by all the vibrations, which is why Garmin redesigned it for the 66x and 350LM, as well as bumping the price to beyond stupid levels.

I can also second GPSCity -- I bought all my RAM mount hardware from them and it came fast/without issue.

It is and I did consider it and found the same part on ebay. In the past whenever I was 'that guy' that would buy it to repair, it always bit me in the ***. I've learned my lesson - that's how karma gets me

We have about 6 different ones here, I'm not crazy about tomtom, the Nuvi are ok, I like Garmin products alot, I've had Magellan products quit at in oppertune moments. You get what you pay for and the weather resistant models are not the same as marine grade. I'm using a Garmin 76X handheld mostly right now when biking.
Radio world has great advice and usually fair prices.

It works AWESOME on the bike. You can track all kinds of info when you sync to the computer. Map out anything you want. I use it for work when I travel, no lag on startup. Works with gloves on. Can't say enough good things about them. The cost more but you get more. I hard wired the power to my battery, and mounted the dock so its permanent. I just take the unit when i'm off the bike (the locking screw keeps it in tight but someone could just bust the entire unit off if they really wanted it).

It's funny how you guys would pass a Zumo 550 deal for 250 and buy something, that doesn't even have north-american maps (quick search revealed that), lol.. notice how the video didn't even demonstrate the GPS navigation?! lmao

Certainly not those who also pay others to change their oil... which is fine if they've got lots of money to waste, but somehow doesn't add up here willing to buy some piece of garbage product when the best can be had for slightly more and half an hour to replace a screen, lol.. i'm just amazed that's all
