I had a Garmin Nuvi which I bought refurbished from Radioworld. The past couple of days is was acting up stating power was disconnected, it wasn't. And well today it stopped working. Tried to plug it into my computer with a different cable, no go.

So I guess I will be shopping around for something new. Probably not refurbished. The model I had was just a car version not a bike one, I thought they were a little pricey. I was fairly happy with what I had large screen and bright. 2 things I liked about my old Tom Tom was I could re-direct the route while live, where as the Garmin I could not, I had to cancel the route and replan it. And I could just copy a route file onto the device without special software (ya no basecamp, not a fan of clunky basecamp)

Suggestions?

I thought the bike ones were pricey too but I bit the bullet and got a Zumo and I’m very happy with it. The price tag stung for a bit though. You can get past years models or refurbished zumo models occasionally for a decent deal.

The in-car models often fail at the usb connection due to the vibrations from the bike. Cheap option would be get another refurbished car model .

I have a TomTom Rider 300
pretty happy with it

tried the phone thing
nothing but a PITA
and they cannot be operated easily with gloves on

Assuming you have a smart phone and data plan you don't mind tapping into, i'd just get a quality phone mount.
I do, but I don't want to do that, since it is more valuable if something happens to it (when it falls out of the mount @anterabae), and well its just a distraction I don't want.

I understand, there are better options than the ram mount, i linked one in that thread. Actually spent some time at home beating it up a little, this thing isn't going anywhere lol.

I switched from a TomTom (blew off the bike) to a retired HTC Desire android phone. The 5" display is brighter and clearer than a Zumo and it works with my gloves. I can run any Android map and rider apps AND it's got a build in FM radio. You can pick them up on Kijiji for $40.

I'll never spend %500-1000 for a Zumo or Rider to get less capability than a phone.

As my eyes get older I think I'm going to need a bigger screen -- maybe try to fit a 7" Android tab or Ipad Mini. Just need to find a suitable case and mount.

Why not go with a bluetooth/headphone setup and rely on voice navigation?

GPS City had the Garmin 396 motorcycle GPS on for $419 recently...
'Might still be on for that price.

Eta... Nope. 'Back.up to $519

Regardless... 'Anyone else sit in wonder of how weak we've become. I can remember when all we had were paper maps to help navigate our way hither and yon...
Lol

Nope never wonder. As I am not always touring.

I just came back from a ride in the city, and ran into some back up construction areas. A GPS would have been helpful to see what alternative streets I could use. ;)

I have a backroads map set on an overlay on my garmin. Let’s me find lots of places to explore and handy for seeing if a gravel road is a dead end etc.

You ride a touring Harley right? If it’s a 2014 or newer you can buy a used OEM Nav system on eBay. Even if it didn’t have it new most of the wiring is already there.

Thanks for the info, I have a 2012 though.

I have the TomTom Rider 550 and happy with it. Had two models prior, the 400 is one to stay clear of, rest seem fine. The 400 had crazy issues that were well documented on internet.

yeah in the cage paper maps are fine
stop at the side of the road for a minute and read/plan
not quite as handy on a bike trip

on long rides my best resources are:
the GPS
McDonalds wifi and clean bathrooms (in the US this is almost always by a gas station)
booking.com app on the phone that is in a waterproof pocket otherwise

That comes with everything these days -- any phone or GPS will connect to my Cardo by bluetooth. I like both!
