Got rear ended in my car at red light.

Similar situation happened to me a few years ago when this lady hit my car. She was 100% at fault and tried to negotiate outside of insurance. I got a quote and called her, she of course thought it was too high. Thought all the car needed was to buff out some scratches and wanted me to take it to a shop where her brother worked at. Told her no way and to expect her insurance rates to go up. When I called my insurance company to make a claim and told the adjuster the story, she agreed, I got to call the shots in this situation, not the guilty party.

The more concessions you make, the more potential for hassle and headaches you give yourself. For myself, I was definitely not okay with leaving my car in the hands of shop who might be willing to cut corners in order to save his buddy a few bucks.

Edit: And hopefully you got all the necessary insurance and driver's information.

I agree with the rest, go for the full freight on this one. As a side note, if you go through insurance, watch your insurance rates over the next couple of years. This happened to me some years back- rear ended while stopped at a light. A couple of years later I noticed a significant rise in my insurance rate. Called them up and they said "well you do have one at fault accident on your record!" So I asked them how can I be at fault when I'm sitting at a red light and I get rear ended? Told them to go back, check and adjust their records-which they did. The only part that really upset me was I only noticed this after two years (payroll deduction and all that). So they got me for one year anyway. Moral-keep a sharp eye on insurance and always ask questions!

Something similar happened to me - it didn't affect my premiums, only my Autoplus report which in turn affected quotes I was getting elsewhere. I have had to wrangle it twice now - one of them had me at-fault for an accident where I wasn't even in the vehicle in question (parents vehicle)
