Got my M1 today, Yeah!

Congrats, and good thinking ahead getting your M2 booked early in the season. What bike you planning to buy?
 
Both great starter bike choices although the Rebel may be a little more expensive to insure as it leans a little more towards the "muscle cruiser" look versus the fairly standard cruiser Vstar 650 design. Even though it's less CC. Could be wrong, but insurance on MC's works in mysterious ways as you'll soon discover. Get quotes before buying anything. ;)
 
Already looked into. You are correct the new Rebels are more expensive which on turn will be more in insurance. Further they are newer bikes. Most of the VStars are early 2000s vs the Rebels late 2010s. I believe the first restyle is 2017.

As long as it has 2 wheels and is not a HD ;) it will be a good choice of bike.

Rebel 500 is sweet never cared for Vstar 650. Have you ever considered the R3 or the Ninja 400?

I love both those bikes. My girlfriends R3 is a blast to ride very well engineered bike.
 
Congrats! you now have the right to pay more taxes and insurance like the rest of us ;)
imho You will ride better faster on the Rebel 500 (y) it has more standard motorcycle ergonomics then a couch-potato cruiser, just as the CBR500 has more standard egos then an Italian crotch rocket and for a beginner that is a good thing.
Ride well and safe this coming ? season.

PS ... if you don't know how to service a carburetor or where to get one fixed free, buy a fuel injection bike.

Get a Fuel Injected bike for sure, when I started I was looking at older bikes and luckily my dad (riding for 40yrs+) told me to not even bother with a carbed bike as a first one. Glad I listened because my buddy bought a Suzuki Bandit, 3 years later it's still in his garage not running and he fiddled with the carbs for a year after giving up. Out of all the CB500 line up, the CBX has the most upright ergos, with a windshield I ca do 800km days easy. First bike I got had no windshield, was fun, though I won't get a bike without one now, simply because all the summer bugs end up on the windshield rather than my visor

At the moment I don't have plans to get on a sports bike. I like the cruiser style, sound and attitude. Who knows, I may hate them and start riding the rockets. My buddy who is starting with me has a KTM Duke 390 already. Will for sure be riding this. I hear that it is a good bike and fun to ride.

The V-star was mainly due to the fact there seems to be an abundance of them on the kijiji at a good entry point. Further everyone agrees that it is a good starter bike

Yeah lets not remind my wife that I will be paying more out of pocket on a regular basis.

I was told the same thing about the carb vs FI. It is surprising that not more bikes are FI.
