Got back from Tail of the Dragon

yellow Wolf once did an Iron Butt just on the dragon, 1,000 miles up and down the dragon in less than 24 hours on the Wing.

Just a quick update. Got back from Tail of the Dragon last night. Was there for whole week with 3 other bikes (trailered them down there). All I have to say is WOW. Might as well sell the bike now cause every road down here now is boring and straight. Did all the other amazing roads over there as well. Beautiful, just amazing scenery.
Rode my new '09 CBR down there. Thing was flawless. Had new Dunlop Q3's on it. Tires are amazin, never failed on me once. Knees down scrapping on turns. Have GoPro videos and professional photos. Will update with photos after work today.
If you haven't been down there then you should really consider to make a trip. Wouldn't recomend to noobs though.
What's with the trailering?Ton's of roads just as good between here and there.

God forbid if you crash or break down.
Ride on the crotch rocket for 12 hours with backpacks is not fun at all, plus excessive wear on them soft tires from straight riding.

I bet yelling at each other every red light would suck too if the riders didn't have some kind of voice comm lol

We wanted to spend 1 week of solid cool roads riding. That is exactly what we did (Dragon and surrounding awesome roads). We don't know any cool roads between Ontario and Dragon area but that's just us. So for us it was only go by highway i75. If you enjoy riding on a straight freeway at constant speed with cop traps everywhere, be my guest.
I just did the same thing for MotoGP event and we were glad that we decided to trailer the bikes down there and not ride that borring route.

Really liked the place. Beautiful area. Guys that I went with stayed there a couple times now.
Can not wait till next year again. Plan is to do The Snake road. It's 3 hours away from the Dragon.

Did you ride alone?

I rode down with a guy from Ottawa, we met a few miles down US 219 south of Buffalo at 7am. We rode all the way down US219 Friday and stayed near Rich Creek VA overnight. Then the second day we wanted to make time and did some interstate to arrive mid day in Robinsville. We went down for the Katriders week long rally. Unfortunately he was involved in a crash Monday(not injured) and decided to ride home Tuesday.

Did part of the BRP up to the detour the following Saturday, some back roads and stayed at the same motel near Rich Creek on the way home, then US219 all the way north Sunday.

I started going down in 2005, and other than missing a year in 06 I've been down every year.

I ride down to that area every year and ride a ton of miles here in Ontario every year and I wouldn't put even a hundred miles a year on anything more than 2 lanes. So no I don't enjoy slabbing it anywhere, but you're truly missing some really great riding between here and there.Call me crazy, but I buy bikes to ride not to drag around in a trailer.

SNIP,but I buy bikes to ride not to drag around in a trailer.

Same here, but as someone who's been going down there for years. Having someone in the group from Canada trailering down is a huge bonus "just in case" your not able to ride home.

I see your point. Trust me I ride any chance I get. To work, from work, after work, weekends. This season I put down 13K already. That's pretty good for a crotch rocket IMO. Maybe it's us not wanting to cary backpacks and bags on the bike. If you can post up your route from Ontario to there I will def look at it. To be honest I'd like to go there one more time this season. How is the riding in the fall down there?
My Q3's have 5K on them and I can certanly see how straight riding took a toll on them already. Awesome tire though.

Never understand the fascination of Nth American Sport Bike riders and backpacks. I'd rather bunjgy down a bag on the tail or get a rack like the Ventura system. <-- This style of rack is so common in Europe and Downunder where I guess people use motorcycles for more than a "sport". Ie. More for a means of transport.

Wife and I have been doing the “Ducks Fly South Ducati Rally” since the
late ‘90’s.

Wealways trailer the bikes for all the reasons mentioned. As a rule we leave the
weekend before the rally and will stay a couple of nights in different places
before arriving at the rally HQ.

We’ve rode most every road on this map and some that are not.

We make yearly pilgrimages to some places like Helen and Dahlonega.

If you’ve never gone put it on your bucket list!

The thing is I never really head strait to the Dragon.I've been going down to that area on bike trips since the early 90's and everytime it's a different route.Never down there in the fall(always the last 2 weeks in July on my holidays)so I couldn't say,but I think it would be awesome scenery then.I don't usually plan anything until the night before even while on the trip.I take a Rand McNally Road Atlas to my room, have a few beers and pick roads for the next day.To me the best part of the Dragon is getting there if you pick the right roads.JMHO.I have saddlebags and a trunk, but I could see where wearing a knapsack for 8 hours a day would be a pain.
