hey guys,
just got a GoPro Hero 3 White edition.
wondering if there are any dedicated threads out there with tips or different ideas on setup, and video editing and all that.
anyway quick questions, i cheaped out and have not got a remote yet, just wondering how handy they really are.
i am thinking its a necessary evil just to start and stop the vids with out having to take gloves off and crack it open every time.

anyway
thanks in advance

I have my remote as my only key chain on my bike key. Makes life much easier

cool, it doesn't blow or bang around to much? i assume it must be rubber or somthing?
thanks in advance

The remote definately helps, especially if you plan on having more than on camera setup.

I just recently started using the GoPro, so i've only tried three setups to far.

1) the side of my helmet, where the cheek area is - gives the best POV as the lens is at eye level.
2) suction cup on gas tank pointing forward - nice view of handle bars and gauges
3) suction cup on the tail of my bike pointing backwards - cool view especially on group rides with other riders

I find 720p and 60fps to be to good balance between quality and file size.

Just got one of these bad boys. As far as placement, tried it on the side of my helmet and absolutely hated it there. The wind buffeting was insane, with my windscreen down it kept pulling my head to the side, windscreen up, it kept pushing it in the opposite direction - most uncomfortable spot I have tried to date. Top of the helmet in the middle seems to work well for me. More of a birds eye view this way but you have to play around with the angle the camera faces to get the angle that you want.

As far as remotes, there's a huge population of folks (myself included) that neither the remote or the app work well. I have had constant problems with both since day 1. Remote starts out great but then it loses connection and I can't stop the video. Really really not user friendly in my experience (feel free to google it or check out go pro forums on this).

You certainly don't have to remove your gloves to start and stop it. If it's within reach (say on your helmet), you can easily start and stop it with gloves on (assuming it's in the housing). With exception of high speed wind noise, you can hear the tones that confirm you have indeed turned it on or off.

Make sure you update he firmware.

Regarding the remote. Pick up the Velcro circles from Canadian tire. Place one (soft one) on the underside of the remote (ensuring the key chain release is accessible still). The other piece strategically placed on your handlebar.

This way it will not bounce around while your ridung. Keeps the bike key with gopro remote nicely contained

Careful, the mounts can fail. My GF found a hero 3 black on mt rainier. Seems like it just fell off the mount. I posted on a few forums to find the owner, but no luck.

Yeah be careful about that. Back in March when I was skiing in Big White, I found two in one run. One still had the mount attached. Managed to locate the owners by hanging around the lifts and waiting for someone to ask the lift jockeys. I'm actually considering purchasing a Drift camera sometime this month as I believe the GoPros still have battery life issues.

To add, the remote that came with my Hero3 Black stopped charging properly (would seemly lock up but still charge, however you had to keep resetting it to check the charge level so it wouldn't overcharge). Currently it is back at GoPro HQ getting RMA'ed.

As for battery, the Drift HD Ghost definitely gets better runtime -- I own both, and can get around 2.5-3hrs out of the Drift, whereas I can only get around 2-2.5hrs out of the GoPro + Battery BackPac (and maybe 1.5hrs on the GoPro battery alone).

i never use the little fob remote i got with my hero 2 package. use my phone all the time tho. can't wait to be able to play back, and hopefully they implement BT connectivity as I think it's lower power than the wifi, and might last a little longer.
