Good first bikes

So as some of you know I was exclusively looking at the 2022 Honda CRF300 Rally but tbh I don’t know how much off-roading I would actually be doing maybe it’s better to just get a street bike? Does anyone have any good recommendations I’ll also do my own research just wanna get the thoughts of people with way more experience than me

If you've got longish legs then that general style of bike is going to be the most comfortable/insurance friendly for a new rider. you could still look at a dual sport and put street tires on it if you are not doing much off-road.

Maybe get a used bike incase you drop it. This doesn't mean to expect to crash, I dropped my 250 twice but never while moving. Get a used bike that is newish (reliable) but has cosmetic damage. In a year's time when you are experienced and want some more power for the highways you can sell the pre-damaged bike for what you bought it for. damaging a pristine, new bike really sucks and really hits the resale value.

That’s some good advice actually thank you I’m not too worried about it getting a little scuffed so long as I can ride it safely. I have pretty long legs I’m a little shy of 6ft 5

Check out this site to compare ergonomics of different bikes with your height/inseam. At 6'5 I think you'd be cramped on some smaller sport bikes/cruisers.

For street - small supermoto is the best to learn on IMO. If I do it all over again - this is the bike I'd start on: KLX300SM

Thanks I’ll check it out my main concern is I will be using it for longer distance and on the highway to get to my cottage in the summer

I believe new riders with an M1 license level aren't allowed to ride on 400 series highways, but I'm not certain. Perhaps this also influences your choices.

And yes, don't buy CRF300L if you don't plan to spend all your time in the dirt.
I rode one last year and it handles like sh*t on asphalt and corners, totally crap on hwy...

I’ll have my M2 by the time I get the bike my previous confusion was just me being uneducated in how the licensing worked

Perfect this actually helps a lot do you have any other recommendations that would be a little better for highway rides

Kawasaki Versys-X 300 would be worth a look for your intended usage
Yesterday I found this one and thought it was a reasonable price, unfortunately, the wife will not let me have a second bike right now.

Others can chime in to confirm if my assumption about the price is right.

Someone suggested the 300 versys-x it’s absolutely perfect for what I need parents like it as well
how do you have time to ride, shouldn't you be trying out for the NBA?

6'5 on a 300? oof.

better go for the adventure type model like a versys, stay away from the sports bikes.
Yeah at 6'5 you're going to have a hard time finding a good starter bike easily (not impossible). My suggestion is to visit some dealerships (or a motorcycle show if there are any left this year?) And sit on a bunch of different bikes to get a feel for fit.. Even if you don't intend on buying a new bike from them
