Getting ready for the season

Agreed....however....this is one of those rules if you break it...off site within 24h.

bears near mine sites are very often a hazard
they get used to eating garbage and lose the natural fear of humans
particularly when they get old and hungry, they can be very dangerous

you're in BC I think? they have nasty bears out there
even a northern Ontario black bear can get ornery when hungry

I don't know how you guys manage to IF. I'm 5'10" and 215lbs not fat and I'm hangry if I don't eat every 2-3hrs. If you've ridden with me you'll know I can fit a partially full bottle of water and 2 sandwiches in the tiny rear compartment of a GSXR1000.
Mind over matter, your body thinks you need to eat because you've trained it for a feeding schedule. In reality it will adapt to any new routine, you just have to get used to it.

You also get used to it and also depends on what's going on.

Day 3 of IF today. Sure I was hungry but I could bear it. Also had a meeting till 12:30 and I just finished eating. I always eat the same thing, same amount for lunch, and I feel fuller than yesterday.

Word.

After cheating for a few days (weekend get away and wedding tasting) I'm back on routine today. 16hr fast and all I had was a steak with some habenero cheese melted on it. I'm stuffed.

Water will eventually get rid of the 'hunger pangs'.

For anyone moving to a low/zero carb diet, you'll find your water intake will sky rocket.

When I start to get hungry I tend to get light headed and usually followed by a small headache

If I don’t feed it the crankiness kicks in And than I’m hangry

Assuming you don't have any health issues I would say extra water intake could solve those symptoms.

Your body feeds on the fuel you've already ingested, eating won't solve anything. :p

No known health issues
I will try the water thing. Staying hydrated

Everyone is different. I've done cuts for vacations and a show and I was aware every minute of every day I was awake during those weeks/months that I was hungry. My numbers including water intake was always on point and adding water would not have curbed my hunger.
Good that some people can adjust to changes. Guess my body is just old-man set in its ways :)

A decent app to use to track weight loss, cardio and caloric intake is MyFitnessPal by under armour. I started using it a few months ago and it exposes a lot of weekness’s you may have in your diet. I was wondering why I wasn’t losing weight as fast I did previously. Then I started entering everything I eat and drink. Beer is like bread in a glass dammit.
It will change your perspective on your eating. It did with me anyway.

I cheat a little every day, keeps me feeling normal.

Yes that's correct. Northern BC. Lots of snow, beautiful country, and bears will be waking up soon.

The fishing is great, but come late Fall the bears will actually chase out the fishermen from their spots as we are competing with them for salmon.

We have a large amount of grizzlies and black bears on site. Have personally seen a 6 pack of wolves as well roaming along the main road.

You sound like a competitor, so I presume you are eating wholesome foods and not crappy frozen food meals.
What's your breakfast looking like?
Personally, while I love breakfast/brunch foods, I love dinner more and I cook what I love to eat, and furthermore, something I can eat for two days in a row. Do you have any inclination to meal prep? Cooking 2 meals, 4 portions each, can get you 4/5 days of IF with 2 meals a day!

When I ride in fair weather, I eat my biggest meal of the day at say 630am. Visit the porcelain throne, and can ride through 3/4pm before I really get "hangry". I don't really follow a strict regiment while riding, so if I come across Kawartha's ice cream or some fries/tart somewhere, I'll either eat one there, or take it home to eat later. In the grand scheme of things, a protein bar in the middle of a "fast period" won't move the needle much.

How's your sleep?
I find I crave midnight snacks when I stay up super late, and of course, if you're only getting like 5-6 hours of sleep on the regular, your mental fog will tempt you more with a snack here and there.

Mind over matter, your body thinks you need to eat because you've trained it for a feeding schedule. In reality it will adapt to any new routine, you just have to get used to it.

100% this. And if you're intaking a lot of sugary things, your body WILL crave sugar.
I find that water trick very handy, even if you're getting a solid few litres of water a day, most times I can chug 250ml of water, distract myself with something mentally/physically engaging, choke down more water after that activity, and the craving is gone with the understanding that "yes body, I will feed you REAL FOOD (maybe even dessert) in a bit, now STFU and go away.

Once you string along a few days of cutting out junk/processed foods, you WILL crave it less.
IIRC, a week or two of consistent IF had me feeling a lot more focused during the day. At the end of the day, once I beat the cravings and "mental weakness", I allowed myself to cheat here and there. Plan to sandwich cheat days between heavier activity/gym days, maybe pass on that second serving of _____ the day before/after, and (if your discipline permits some cheating) let yourself GO.

I IF maybe 5-6 days a week, and when I'm out with friends for an event or party, I'm tossing all sorts of junk and dessert down the hatch.

That is sad. RIP to your coworker.

We never know when the day will come. The best we can do it lead a lifestyle that will prolong that as much as possible. Healthy eating and exercise.

Although I am not overweight (5'6, 180ish lbs), and don't necessarily eat poorly (home cooked meals, no fast/junk food) I know I can do better.
I have never really been a gym type of guy. Combination of lack of time and low interest. I prefer to participate in a sport than hit the gym for a specific routine of exercise. I do play rec soccer once a week but I don't think that is enough.
I know that I can and will need to do better as 40 is creeping up in a a few years. Much easier to get a head start than work backwards when you are in a hole already.

Here's a shot at offering a different point of view.
Just like an old bike, seals, rubber, vacuum lines all deteriorate with the years especially if you are lazy and just park it out under the sun. In hindsight, if you have the opportunity to park it in a heated/cooled garage a few years ago and prolong the "lifespan" of those OEM parts, you'd park it in the garage 10/10 times right?

Well, your joints and ligaments are incredibly adaptive and have become strong with supporting your extra weight all these years. If you are able to drop down to (whatever goal weight here), and lighten the load for all your pre-existing strong joints/ligaments/muscles now, and carry that "fat boy strength" longer into your senior years, not only will you be able to ride and go on adventures longer into your retirement years, but also have the option to become the old man giggalo... too far off track.

Would you strap on 4 Nato gas cans on your street bike for no other reason when putting around town? Hope not.
GO GET IT BOYO!

Breakfast is 3/4c oats cooked with some berries added with a scoop of whey isolate and 4 eggs on the side.
I've been meal prepping every week for the past 20yrs (vacations not included).
I don't eat sugary/junk food or anything processed.
I don't need help with diet or getting in shape, I'm just saying IF doesn't work for everyone nor do hungers always disappear.

Couldn't disagree more. Same mentality smokers who can't quit have.

Do you believe you actually have to eat on some sort of routine? Unless your stomach is running the show I think not.

I think you know what you need to do. However if I may add my 2cents.

Keep it simple, stupid. It is all about eating.
You want to be a track runner, you need to eat the proper foods for endurance.
You want to gain muscle mass you need to eat a ton of food. The right foods that is.
You want six pack abs... Well there is a saying, abs are made in the kitchen.

You can spend the hours and hours at the gym and not get the results you are looking for. i hit the gym everyday and see guys pushing good weight but they jiggle while doing it.

They are going to gain strength but they will still have the excess fat.

Its lifestyle. You mention you eating habits, "if I come across Kawartha's ice cream or some fries/tart somewhere, I'll either eat one there, or take it home to eat later ". As you know you should keep moving. Don't stop to pick these up. Don't stay up late. Staying up late has been proven that you will gravitate to junk food. Your body needs time to rest and recover.

Getting back to KISS.
Cut out as much processed sugar as you can.

That's it. This means going for live foods rather then processed. However if you have to utilize a processed food, choose one with low sugar. Eliminate sugar in your tea/coffee by slowly decreasing it.

Remember, the label may not say "sugar" but will have something else. Modified corn syrup. BAD! Dextran, malt powder , Fruit juice concentrate, Maltodextrin etc. all bad. Also the honey, sugar in the raw, agave syrup are all sugars. Does not matter which format it is, it is sugar. Your body reacts more or less the same way.

Give yourself 2 weeks by eliminating added sugars. The first you cravings will be intense. Possible headaches and such. Maybe even crankiness. But push through. The 2nd week gets better.

By the end of the 2nd week, you should be able to take coffee black. Maybe even espresso straight. But for sure, your taste buds will have changed. Certain foods will be too sweet.

I'm not a fan of intermittent fasting. I think people have the wrong idea of how IF works. MSRP, you mention that you will eat breakfast and then not eat all day. Not much different then IF. So how is that working for you.

Since your body does not know when your next meal is, it is storing fat. Every time you eat, it takes a little and stores it away. You need to accelerate your metabolism. Once your metabolism is active, that is hen IF comes into play. But I think a little complicated and thus won't get into. You would have to do the research.

As mentioned, KISS.

On more thing I suggest looking into

Glycemic index diet

Glycemic index diet: What's behind the claims

This continues with eliminating sugars.

I think I have an old version of this book in a PDF. If interested PM me and will see if I can find it and send it.

However a lot can be found on the net.

Not in a 16hr fast when majority of it is spent sleeping. You're talking about a more extreme starvation situation where the body stores fat and actually absorbs more calories when you eat. IF promotes your body to burn the fuel it's already storing, aka fat.

There are 2 direct benefits to IF;

Typically the average person will lower their calorie intake. This can result in modest weight loss, depending on factors.

Second, you'll take more control over your insulin levels. Everytime you chow down your blood sugar/insulin spikes and your body begins to store energy 2 ways, carbs and fats. The issue is there is finite space for glucose (carbs) and when you hit that wall it just begins to store it as fat.

Controlled eating = burn bad fuels first (fat)

No one has mentioned diabetics, although that food guide might be a diabetic tool.

I have a 6 day routine - doing the same thing every day, but Friday.
I try to do a hot yoga class every day but Friday. Keeps me strong, flexible and fit.
Try to run about 15km / week, but also have cycle trainers in the basement w/ Netflix when injured or weather sucks.
The exercise is really important for helping me do long days on the bike.

I've been vegetarian for about 11 yrs, which has been a really positive influence for me and quit smoking 12 yrs ago.
I now eat a big bowl of oats every morning with homemade trail mix, blueberries, raspberries, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4cup of flax/chia/hemp hearts mix.
Only drink chai or green tea during the day - 1 tea bag and just keep adding water throughout the day.
Eat a nice healthy lunch and never eat fast food (McDonalds etc).
Eat a small dinner.
Snacks during the day are usually apples, oranges, kiwis and other fruits when in season.
Oh and try to grow lots of my own veggies in the backyard during the summer/fall.

Since Friday is high day I change it up.
Still have my oats so I feel good all day at work.
For lunch eat Roti or Burrito Boyz or Thai or Pasta - something super delicious with co-workers
For dinner I eat Golden Grahams and Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch all mixed together. Sometimes two big bowls back to back if I have the munchies.
For dessert, I have some chocolate, ice cream, or Ms Vickies chips.
Cap it off w/ some drinks and party treats and enjoy my evening.

Saturday morning it's a new week - clean off the previous night with a 2hr yoga class and a run - then rinse and repeat.
For me, it's about balance.

Good luck to all of you in achieving your goals.
