Getting Bike properly registered

Hi guys,

A friend of mine sold me his old bike. I did the insurance. The bike still has his licence plate attached to it but no sticker. I was able to drive it home and he gave his ownership and signed a bill of sale on the back. Now. How can properly register it? He just gave me his licence plate as a gift. I went to service ontario today, they said I have to do the safety, tow my bike to mechanic since it cannot be operated. What is proper procedure? Sorry for the stupid question. It's me first bike. Thanks

He can't give you his plate, they aren't transferable unless immediate family.

To get it transferred to your name you need the ownership signed by him, the UVIP signed by both of you, the insurance policy and the safety inspection. Take all that to service Ontario and they'll issue new plate with an ownership.

DO NOT need the insurance OR safety to get it transferred to your name. That's only if you want to get it plated.

go back to SO with bill of sale and signed ownership and insurance slip
buy the UVIP
they'll register it your name and provide a license plate and 10 day temp reg
get the safety done
go back to SO with safety cert and get your regular reg sticker
Do as J_F says, then you can ride the bike back and forth to your mechanics, tire shop etc. If you transfer UNFIT and do not get a temp sticker, you cannot go back later for a temp sticker.

That's right, I forgot about the 10 day sticker.

Probably the best way to do it if you can't ride it and don't want to pay for a tow.

Only bad part is having to wait 2 hours in line at SO twice with their current covid hours.
