German School & Hwy 24

Rather than taint the fallen riders post I'll throw this out here. If it's inappropriate the mods can delete or move as they see fit.

There seems to be some concern that hills in the area contributed to the crash. From Google street view a stop sign for German School Road is visible from at least 300 feet away, a football field length. This is not FOTC Road.

Most of Ontario is slightly hilly so an overpass / cloverleaf at every intersection is not feasible.

The crash occurred early morning so were people rushing and glancing for traffic instead of actually looking?

I feel sorry for the widow but there will be more until there is a cure for SMIDSY.

Ride safe and never assume the other driver or rider will do what you think they will, 24/7. It won't be as much fun.

Everything is fun until someone gets hurt.

Remove the word crash from your title and we are no longer discussing the details of a single tragic incident, we are talking about the intersection.

his viewpoint is right in the intersection itself: Google Maps

Looking south, there is no blind spot at all. At least from the point of view of the Streetview camera (which we have to keep in mind, is higher up than an average driver's viewpoint), the road surface is completely visible, therefore anything travelling on the road surface is completely visible.

Looking north, the road dips away, but it's hard to say if the crest is high enough that a vehicle could be obscured by it if the viewpoint was lower to the ground. Pretty sure there's clear visibility for at least 100 metres, and that's enough for any vehicle to stop from normal highway speed.

About the only way to not see traffic at an intersection like that, is when the traffic is behind other traffic.

Or someone does see it and misjudges the velocity.

That happens both with vehicles that are small and ones traveling way above the limit, even for the few people who are good at judging closing speeds.
