Gear!

Velocity has a combo deal that is basically 50% off of retail.
The leather jacket is top notch protection.
The textile jacket will give you lots of versatility, hot or cold, rain or shine.
The jeans or cargo pants will offer you better rotection than street jeans, but still look casual enough to wear off the bike once you get where you're going.
The Velocity gloves are the best protection in gloves I have ever seen in 30 yrs of riding.
...then you get an armoured vest to boot. You simply can't beat this combo. Buy a helmet and boots and you're set for a couple years at the very least.

Here's my two cents... How much would you pay to get new skin if you crashed? Think about that when buying gear.

In my case, I'm glad that I didn't spend a lot of money on gear when I started riding. Even thou I had help from friends that had been riding for years, now I don't agree with the gear that they use... Also, my preference and understanding for bike gear has changed a lot compared to when I first started riding. My first helmet was a bit tight (only found after my first 3 hour ride), so I had to get a new one. Had a small slip with a textile over pant... Bought leather after that. So buying slow and cheap helped me save money because I re-bought almost everything I had.. But also keep in mind that the chances of your falling are a lot higher when you start.

I would also advise staying away from textile if you are really worried about safety. As you will hear, "it's better to sweat than bleed", referring to wearing leathers in a hot day. This is a term used a lot by ATGATTs (all the gear all the time) , which I'm proudly one.

Here's a souvenir of a crash at about 40 an hour... This is what happens to textile:

Something else to think about... Buy used gear for the first time (I would say except helmet). This way you can see what you like and then spend real money on it.

Good luck and ride safe.

For the course try to see if you could borrow some stuff from friends that ride. The reason I say this is because what if you don't like riding? I'd say after the course get the best gear that you can afford. As you get more experience you'll realize what gear works for you.

Go to Jimmy's (Velocity) office and try out his gear. I have his armored jeans. Fairly comfortable to wear, way more protection than regular jeans, obviously less protection than full leather pants.

+1 Jimmy had a great deal going on not too long ago he may still have some stuff left. Give him a call!
