Gear Help?

FFS, that's exactly what I did. Take your head out of ... sand and go check other forums. Dainese are one a few pairs of boots which will not bend 90 degrees on the side. I guess you own alpinestars boots and just too blindly proud.

EDIT: even googled it for you - one of many links:
http://www.southbayriders.com/forums/threads/23835/

First two youtube links are great reviews: http://www.youtube.com/results?sear...83.1.1.0...0.0...1ac.1.11.youtube.dfysUCRXMtg

Then check videos of inner construction from the same stores of any other boots, including Alpinestars.

And yes, I did have a pair of great alpinestars boots before, well, at least I saw those were great considering $300 price tag.

I can tell that I'm going to get an infraction by the time this is over. What I'm trying to say is that all manufacturers make mediocre boots but a few of them do offer a safer, high end boot. $300 will not get you such a boot from either company, not at retail anyway.

Now, read the following carefully, then go away.

Yes, Dainese makes a boot with a system to help prevent the ankle from bending at an extreme angle. Others make boots like that as well, such as Alpinestars & Daytona. Not all Dainese or Alpinestars boots have this feature.

I'm selling a set of the black Dainese Scarpa Dyno's in a size 7.5US/40 EUR if you're interested (PM'd you). I've only worn them a handful of times and selling them only because I bought a set of fullsize Dainese's in Italy.

I was thinking about the SMX2's s well but when I went to the store and saw what them in person and felt the difference in protection I opted for the Dainese's instead. The SMX 2 is more of a shoe and is soft around your ankles which allows for a lot of flex. The Dainese's however, have reinforced ankles and protection that goes well above them as well (sure it's a little bit more money than the A*'s, but the SMX2 is only a little safer than wearing Jordans).

In regards to boots. Some so called "raceboots" are nothing more than a leather boot with lego glued to it.Any impact will turn it into a pile of shattered plastic.I've seen it done.Daytona or Dainese are the best choices.Buy the best gear you can afford and wear it.Just my experience.

In the Alpinestars line, the only models with adequate ankle bending protection are the Supertech R and the SMX Plus.

I broke my ankle very badly wearing a full ankle brace. It was a trimaleolar fracture which means both ankle bones and the heel. A reasonably unusual fracture. I wondered how it could have been so bad (sliding tackle in soccer) considering I was wearing the brace, so I did some reading afterwards and it seems I may have been lucky in a way too. Overly stiff ankle protection can lead to fractures in the large bones of the leg in some cases and also femur in severe cases as there's nowhere else for the stress to go. Fractures in those bones can be worse and harder to heal than in the smaller ankle bones.

Of course it depends on the type of get-off involved and I do still have stiff (but not completely rigid) boots and I'm not at all saying the experts that design boots are wrong. Just something to think about.
