Garmin Zumo PAIN!

I actually did click it into place and it was fine for about 1 KM or so, before it fell out. I remember i had to put it in with some force, same as first time, because it wouldn't fit properly otherwise.

You should have no problem with getting it replaced then. I have found Garmin to be very good while in warranty... outside of warranty is another story.

You do not want to look at any different mounting, at least for the cradle as that is what will power your Zumo and still keep it waterproof. Not sure there are any mounts out there that will let you power the device... don't think the Zumo will even let you operate it while plugged in via USB.

I got an email, they are going to RMA me a new one.
I will be selling it, the tomtom has much more secure mounting cradle system.

Thanks for everyone's advice and help.

Good luck with the TomTom! The mount looks interesting, I like how you can flip it from to vertical or horizontal views.

I tried finding a video or pictures of the Zumo mount, I am assuming you had the Zumo 395. I saw it briefly in a video and definitely looked more flimsy then the mounts I am used to coming with the higher end Garmin Zumo lines (have had Zumo 550, 650 and now BMW Nav V).

Would love to hear your review of the TomTom once you get it and have some miles under your belt with it. Does it have an offline mapping solution similar to what Garmin has with Basecamp?

I have a Touratech lockable mount for my Zumo 660. Pricey but well worth the money, can leave my Zumo on the bike now when I pay for gas etc. but even before that I never had an issue with Garmin mounts, not with the 550 nor the 660. You must have gotten a lemon mount...:(

Here is my dead GPS!

The mount for the Zumo 395 does not look like the mount for the 550 or 660, where it powers the bike through the cradle. I would be curious to see an actual image of the cradle for the dead Garmin, I only saw a quick shot in a youtube video.

Based on a stock image I found, it looks like the old nuvi cradles. Not confidence inspiring on a bike.

Hahaha. Holy crap. What ran over it?

I have had some equipment bail while riding but luckily it just slid along and other than some road rash it was still fine.

It fell off near a highway offramp, i had to walk back 1 KM to find it, so i assume..many many many cars:(

Said mount.

Those 2 little "clips" are what holds the GPS in.

That is a similar mount to the Zumo 660 and my BMW Nav V. When it is snapped in place it is held by those clips as well as the notch at the bottom. Never ever had an issue with this type of mount, when in place they are solid... as long as the cradle is not defective.

Mine fell of at low speed but it was totally my error in that I had not set in place properly as the steering was locked and the tankbag had prevented it from being set properly. Forgot to set in place once I had unlocked and started the bike.

Agree that unit should not have fallen off if it was seated and locked in place. Nice of Garmin to replace it.

It fell off. I noticed something last night, as I was riding with tomtom. It was vibrating a whole lot. I wonder if that's why it fell off the mount? The Garmin.

Needless to say, I am going with a tank bag now for it.

Are you sure the Garmin was a Zumo and not a Nuvi? I've never heard of the Zumo 235, plus if it was a zumo it should come both with an auto mount and a motorcycle one with hard-wired power. The TomTom also has their auto models and their motorcycle models (Rider).

Reason I ask too is I can't see the Zumo falling out of the stock cradle (which I believe is also built by RAM), but if you are using one of the automotive suction style mounts then yeah...it will fall off on a bike as it isn't designed for that (esp the tiny suction cup models).

It would have to be some serious vibration, and even then the way it is locked in there the whole mount with gps would fall off. My dad and my uncle both have Garmin Nuvi 550's mounted to their Harleys and those things vibrate a lot when standing still (smooth when moving) and they never fall out or even slip, they are very firmly secured in the garmin mounts.

It was the 390. It came off is all I know. I firmly placed it in, I heard the click.

Tom tom software seems weak compared to the Garmin.

I was looking at the TomTom Rider, the interface seems very slick and modern, compared to Garmins which feels old and utilitarian... which works ok for me, though some fresh UI is always a good thing. I wonder how the TomTom Rider stacks up to the Zumo feature wise.

I am still baffled how people pay 600 bucks for a GPS. Crazy prices ...
