Gah! Someone stole my left side cover today...

Grrr!

Who the f*&% would want a left side cover from a 1981 CB 750 Custom? Went and had some lunch at Burrito Boys at King and University. Got back and did my usual walkaround of the bike and saw this sad sight:

That just screams "my owner doesn't care about me". Missing side covers is/was the scourge of bikes back in the day.

Gah!

Not only is this going to be a major pain in the rump to replace I am not sure I like where this is going. The bike is worth $1500-$2000 max no matter what I do to it. The temptation is going to be there to replace the rough original 4 into 4 original exhaust with a nice new 4 into 2 exhaust (keeping the original system of course) and perhaps put some new, slightly lower handle bars on it and... Before I knew it I could easily put the better part of $2000 into the thing...

Maybe just see if I can find another left side cover...

Oh, this is how my bike used to look... :(

I had my Chevelle for 11 years and I took a lot of pride in restoring/restifying/maintaining it.

I just found a guy on a cafe racer forum who makes side covers. Will see if I can get a set from him. While not stock anything is better than no side cover at all. :(

I'm not laughing at your expense, but for every 80's UJM I ever had I wondered what would happen if the average Joe realized if you could just pull off the side covers with a gentle tug. Never mind that finding unmolested covers for a reasonable price can be nearly impossible!

Guess someone figured it out.

We don't put money into old bike cause they will be worth more. We do it for the pride in the ride. Replace that cover and try not to let it bug ya. That does suck though man. Someone needed that part for their resto...and clearly that person was a Scumbag.

Man, last time I had a cover stolen was early 90s. It's a real pain especially when you have a rare colour bike.

I call BS!

This story rings of a cleverly disguised ploy to convince the wife that some mods (a cafe racer forum has already been mentioned) are required to the bike now that impossible to replace parts have been stolen. ;)

Is there anything that can be done to secure them?

no, not really. I think I used zip ties to stop them just popping them out quickly, but maybe there is a way to screw them down to something.

Sucks. Good clean specimens are quite rare and expensive on eBay, not that surprising that someone would steal it.

I also use zip ties on mine just to prevent them from flapping about at highway speeds.

is it possible it just fell off? the little rubber bits that hold them on get tired with time.

If there's literally nothing securing them my vote goes to Toronto pot holes as the culprit.

sucks man, good luck on replacement

I have a red plastic CB 750 side cover at home. I'm not sure if it's for the right or left side (and no, I did not steal it off a parked bike). Please PM me with your email address, I'll snap a picture of it so you can see what I've got AND if it's the right one, I will mail it to you (as I am in Ottawa) but you'll have to pay the shipping.

A perfect example of a great riding community, cheers Lord-Humongous

That's a great idea! I will see if I can drill a small hole in the right remaining cover in an inconspicuous spot and use a black zip tie. Wish I had of known that the other day!
