Funny story about an r6 i went to look at yesterday

when you show up and the bike looks unclean, run. those of us that love their bikes would never let it get to that stage. everyone has a different take on mint, perfect, showroom. a clean bike is a great start.

+1
especially a bike for sale
it MUST be clean

In the case of sportbikes, it frequently means a major collision that necessitated the replacement of the gauge cluster. This tends to be shown fairly easily though, if a UVIP is pulled.

Not true! What if somebody bought a bike with 10k on it rode it and sold it with lets say 25 k on it, then this guy rides it till it gets to 50k but right before he sells it puts an odo on it with 29k? Looks legit on all fronts.

Then the expression "tends to be" would be in force ;)

+1... I don't understand why people negotiate if they have no intention to buy, must get an adrenaline rush or something?
I would of walked away as soon as I found out the difference in KM's between the advertised KM's and the actual KM's showing.

For a serious rush, i like to show up at auctions.. bid on items... then bolt!!

It is how he operates. He has done it before, even to the point he left a deposit according to one of his posts here, then changes his mind and demanded his deposit back.

I sell cars and I see this kind of thing happening every day.
I often get people negotiate without even sitting inside the car or even think twice if they like it or not!
People have been brainwashed to automatically negotiate... Oh, you're asking 6000$ ?... that's too much, what's the best you can do?... it's too old, too many KM's blah blah blah, then why the F are you negotiating if you think it's not worth it?

Why haggle/put a deposit if you're not sure?
instead of wasting the seller's time, patience and possibly pressuring the seller to give you the absolute best price he's willing to sell it for, just make sure that you want to buy the damn thing!

If I'm looking at something I want, and feel like it's within my budget whether the seller is flexible or not, I'm going to buy it!

These are two huge personal pet peeves for me.. I absolutely hate it when people negotiate me down on a price of something I'm selling to then walk especially with no real intention of buying... Ex. "will you take $X.XX... OK... Sweet.. I'll definitely come back when I get some money"... Don't offer a specific price if you don't have the intention or ability to pay it..
I also personally hate when people put a deposit down.. choose not to buy and then expect a deposit back. The concept of a deposit is a committment to buy the item. It locks the item up temporarily from being sold to someone else. If you break the committment, you don't get the deposit back.. thus the whole concept of a deposit. Amazing how many people don't seem to get it... HUGE pet peeve...

You may have walked cuz the kms, but i wasnt to put off by that, i wanted to check out out further and wasnt happy after all. !

Do you realize what kind of sprocket change would be required to increase the mileage like he claimed?

+10 in the back and - 8 in the front? lol

he says it has 29k on it, i sold it 2 years ago with 38k on it.

Might be a typo, he pressed a 2 instead of a 3 and some how only road the bike 1 km lol in the last 3 years.

kids and bikes dont mix, finances are tight. i sold recently and never took a deposit that way i always had the hammer. the first guy who rushed in with the asking price got his toy.

Your math is out a bit, it would be 39k - 38k = 1k = 1,000 km. (not 1km) I could see that in 2 (not 3 years) years for some people.

Lol when I bought my bike I had no idea what to look at except asking the right question. So this guy had an ad on kijiji in ottawa. 2009 Ninja 250 special edition 3700 clicks for 4500$.

So I spoke to him over the phone and got him to reduce the price to $4300. I took my dads van and went to Ottawa, left at 5am got there at 12 ish. I asked the guy to get it certified in front of so we met at a yamana dealership.

I Did some visual check ups on the bike in the parking lot and noticed some cracks around the right signal light. And the guy told memover the
Phone that it had never fallen down no cracks no damage etc...I asked him WTF that was??? I drove for 6 hrs cause you said it never went down??? He said his daughter was riding her bicycle and hit that side. Apart from that there was nothing else visible.

Anyhow I got him to get a UVIP and get it certified. I found it odd that the bike had 5 owners including him in such a short period of time but the dealership owner told me sometimes it's normal with low cc bikes.

Soooo I got him down to $3700 and loaded the bike in my van (the guys at the dealership were like wtttttttffffff? That's a first timer) lol anyhow I relied fully
On the dealership ppl tell the truth and I actually did not even have my m1 so I didn't know how to start a bike lmao.

Anyhow that's my story, the bike is running great and I'm trying to maintain it properly. I don't think I got ripped off, or have I???

I did the same. Guy showed up on a Friday night to check the bike over and offered to put down a deposit. I told him to keep the deposit and come back with the full negotiated price. The bike would still be for sale in the meantime. He was back first thing Saturday morning with a certified cheque.

So, how is someone supposed to protect themselves from these types of scenarios, especially when the person is willing to lie through their teeth about the bike they're selling; even more so when most aren't willing to let you test ride?

Be well educated on the Bike before you go and always good to have someone with knowledge go with you.

Some times wanting a Bike so bad you miss things a buddy might see.

Reminds me of a few years ago when I went to look at a ZX-10 (I've always wanted one of those) ... price seemed good (almost too good) and the bike looked pretty mint (daylight). Then, I find out some broken pieces of plastic near the rad and asked the seller if it had ever been crashed/down/parts broken by accident. And he says nope. He notices I start getting cold feet and offers me to take it for a ride, which I decline.

I come back on here, where I originally saw the ad, took a look at his posts, and find all these posts he made about how hard the OEM parts are to find online. Finally, I find a post by the seller, selling slightly rashed/spare parts.

When you have a gut feeling about something, your gut is usually right. I rewarded my instincts by buying a brand new bike that I got to break in and enjoy the new smell on.. for a few grand more.
