Funny How the Public Views Motorcyclists.....

Try walking into a mall with full riding gear on, helmet in hand.. and if you're wearing HiViz vest as well!

or I often stop at the Superstore at 401/McCowan to pick up a few groceries on the way home. No one feels intimidated other than the minivan driving dads trailing behind their wives ;)

Interesting question to me at least. I wear a full face but sometimes I am going to be in a store for only a minute, don't feel like carrying it or I am just to lazy to undo the straps so I just walk around with it on. I have the visor up. But I feel like I am getting the looks. Is it strange to do that really?

As an aside, yesterday I was in a plaza parking lot and a little old lady had just received a ticket for parking in the fire zone. I was riding by and she waved me over and asked "Did you give me this ticket?" I pointed to the guy parked behind her and said "No I am not a cop, it is that guy there." There is nothing that makes me look like a cop but I guess that is what I look like.

I do find people a lot friendlier. I always figured it was "be nice to the organ donor".

I haven't hand a problem with anyone giving me looks for walking in with my helmet on. Although, that's because I've been going to the same corner store, and bank, since I moved here. So after 4 years, the workers remembered me. So everytime I walk in with my helmet still on head, they don't even fidget.
I would imagine if I went into an unfamiliar store, where the workers don't know me, I'd get a different look (especially if I did it at a bank.)
Also: I take my helmet off if I'm inline at the bank, if it's just for the machine I leave it on. Although I do like going through the drive-through at the bank, the roof above the machine makes a nice echo with the exhaust!

Yeah I made a booboo once like that. My home branch is also very used to me walking in in my gear/helmet, so I didn't think twice about doing the same thing at a different branch...cops were showing up as I was walking out. All in all I got a chewing out from the cops and about 1000 apologies from the branch manager.

haha, I can imagine...

Apparently when they hit the holdup alarm they can't call to say "No I'm just a sheltered suburban housewife and I overreacted."

I mean who lifts their visor and removes their gloves to stick up a bank :p

I think the problem is they hit the alarm as soon as you walked in... They should of waited until you showed some sign of threat.

That's like hitting the alarm just because a black guy walked in; it's prejudice.

Not sure if they even waited for me to cross the doormat lol. No more black helmet with mirror visor so that's a plus I guess.

I stopped for a coffee the other day at a Tim's. I ride a VTX 1800 and wear the appropriate Joe Rocket gear. There was maybe 15-20 customers in the store at the time. I am older and definitely not intimidating, but when I walked in conversation literally stopped and all the old ladies stopped in mid-chew and stared along with their mates. It was sooo obvious that I instinctively checked to see if my fly was open.. nope. These people seemed intimidated and wary. It was not the first time this has happened. Do non riders really view us differently? It also wasn't my body language as I was quite relaxed and just wanted a coffee. It was right out of the Twilight Zone......

You may have received such a response because of most of the time Timmies are inundated with SHEEP, aka Harley riders lol....

Yes, you get looks sometimes. I think it has more to do with the gear though. It just looks different and catches peoples' attention.

The worst is when people are trying to talk to you in a store and you can't hear **** because you still have earplugs on under the helmet. Self-checkout really makes this less awkward.
