Funny How the Public Views Motorcyclists.....

I stopped for a coffee the other day at a Tim's. I ride a VTX 1800 and wear the appropriate Joe Rocket gear. There was maybe 15-20 customers in the store at the time. I am older and definitely not intimidating, but when I walked in conversation literally stopped and all the old ladies stopped in mid-chew and stared along with their mates. It was sooo obvious that I instinctively checked to see if my fly was open.. nope. These people seemed intimidated and wary. It was not the first time this has happened. Do non riders really view us differently? It also wasn't my body language as I was quite relaxed and just wanted a coffee. It was right out of the Twilight Zone......

You assumed intimidation, perhaps it was admiration? Or simple curiosity? Or maybe the old ladies really were checking out your package? ;-)

Well, because riding is not for everybody and the riding population is small, compared to driving population, the public conception of riders is that they all are rough badasses and mofos.

Plus, all the gear does its job of giving you that "don't fock with me" look.

I think a lot people pu$$y out when they are in the presence of a rider.

Maybe you guys all thought that before you rode but I didn't think anything "scary" of riders before I got my bike.

I think it's curiosity not intimidation unless you're a hells angel or something in that nature

I had a couple of cougar-ish women talk to me yesterday while I was stopped on the bike... I assumed it was a Milton thing.

I do notice people either seem more respectful, intimidated or friendly around me when they know I ride. Cars seem to drive faster around me as well.
I think it's because there's a stereotype around motorcyclists..hm anyone know what that stereotype is?

Teachings from suburbia private school:
Cruiser riders are all 1%ers
Sportbike riders are either affiliated with street gangs or suicidal
Only drug runners ride dirtbikes on road
Touring bikes like goldwings are ok.

Thankfully my parents reminded me that was a load of b.s.

The 12 and under crowd have their jaws dropped in awe at the "power ranger" look I sport.

Yes...That's funny! I swear I can tell which kids are gonna ride someday by seeing how they're in such awe of the bike. I was just like that when I was a kid!

I find the curiousity factor even more pronounced being a chick on a bike.

I had some kid drooling over my bike earlier.
I stopped at a red light, and he was crossing with my mom, sister and brother. He looked maybe 6ish, and his sister probably 4ish, other brother idk. Him and his sister had their head turned the whole time staring at my bike as they walked, the girl even tripped up because she was distracted.
And even after they got to the other side of the road, the kid just kept turning around every 2 seconds to look until the light changed and I had to drive. Imagine if I had a better looking bike!

As much as I HATE kids, sometimes they're alright. That li'l dude was alright.

Live life.....taste death!

Don't wear your helmet inside Tim Hortons.... they thought you were robbing the place. :p

Thanks for that laugh..I almost spit my coffee all over the computer... Maybe the ol' ladies were checking out the "package", but that opens up a whole other can of worms because what were all the men staring at? (don't think I really wanna know....)

Depends on the Timmies, maybe? The one by my mom's house is frequented by the 65 and over crowd that like to stop in for lunch or get a soup. Bikers, at the particular Timmies you stopped in at, might not be so much the frequent sight.

The Tims by us is getting used to more "sightings". Quite a few of the rides start in the parking lot, lol.
