Why is that? They sell it here.

That's kind of interesting re: the KTM. Apparently nothing newer than 2007 is allowed, across the board for KTM, for every model. Reason is unknown to me.

Minor quibble, the RC8 is not the same as the new RC8R. But yes, the R is sold both in the USA and Canada. Weird.

But, happily the Yamaha is ok for all models all years, so our OP could get a Yamaha SR400 in the US new if he found a dealer with one.

Who knows how Transport Canada determines admissibility. Being sold here is no guarantee of import admissibility, e.g. Kymco is not allowed at all though pretty much their full line is sold here through a dealer network.

Well I learned something today then.

I asked Transport Canada this. They indicated that KTM has not applied to have this exemption on the RC8R and I'd have to ask KTM why. My guess is they see it as a premium niche product and are concerned with undercutting sales. You could debate how many people would import them and how many customers you drive off with the can/us price premium. Either way, I think the price here is too high for what it is, so I never bought one. Sweet looking bike though.

Why is that? They sell it here.

What's "reasonable"? I paid 2900 or so for an '83 GS400 last year, Nordic (facility) through John Duffy. I was 22, had just gotten my M1, had a G as well, but I don't think that even mattered. Liability only, $200k.

If I had to pay that much year one if would have just bought a bus pass, maybe I got lucky cuz I started on a 250 for one year before getting a 400. Only in But it's been about $1000 a year both years for $1 mil liability. And im only 21

OP are you insured on a car, any previous driving history helps, also try TD Meloche Monnex, their rates are good but you need to be part of a group like a university

Actually, my father has his GM2. The only problem is that we live at different residences,
That actually works to your advantage. Because you don't live with him, you don't have to be listed on his policy "if you are an occasional rider". Just share the bike with your dad, you cover the cost for him to insure it, problem solved, no fraud committed, cheap insurance for you, your dad gets to ride too!

If I had to pay more than $1200/year for a bike i'd give it up. Insurance on my vfr750 with 95HP is $390/year
It's a 2k bike no theft or collision. With 120,000km all I needed to do other than brake pads and tires was a rear wheel bearing. A new thing did pop was my front brake light switch failing which was $15 from honda.

My ns400r (475cc and 90hp) is going to even cheaper at $200 a year.

I'm so glad I don't live in the gta.

Well you have to take the good with the bad, right? It's not very practical or desirable for everyone to live outside of GTA .. so the insurance rates are what they are.

24 YO
i have a 74 cb550
I have less than 1 year owning my M2 (8 months)
I have 2 tickets
I pay 450 per year no restriction except HTA/CAIA
I pay less with my car now that i have a bike bundled.

Yes insurance FRAUD is one way to go..lol of course if you get caught they won't pay out on any claims you make. Plus good luck finding insurance, (if you think they want a lot now), just tell them oh yes I have been canceled do to insurance fraud..lmao

Not sure why people think advising someone to cheat the system and risk it all is a good idea. Lets say your unfortunate like the rider on Yonge a few weeks ago get in a collision and your bike hits and seriously injures a pedestrian and you have NO coverage. You will be paying for the rest of your life. Also under the scenario presented, your "dad" would also need to obtain his M1 licence then his M2. If you get in an accident with the bike say in 120 days they will check. Ooops dad has no motorcycle licence yet he has the bike registered and insured to him, and you had "borrowed" it to run somewhere. Just HOW stupid does everyone think insurers are???LOL.

It is painful, to have to pay these type of premiums but we all had to do it when we started to ride. Perhaps for now a car is a better option. Get you G then in a few years you'll be over 25 and have had your g for 5 years then get a small bike, (125 or 250), to start and you will have a few more options of companies to choose from.

I have the same view on insurance fraud as you and I was surprised that an insurance broker on here part of CSIB was telling riders to get their parents to get licenses and having the bike insured under them.
