Fruit flies taking over my house!

Peeps, a little help. For the past week Ive noticed that fruit flies had been appearing in the kitchen. So I assumed maybe something had gone bad or something spilled and I hadnt seen it, I began to take my kitchen apart looking for it, found nothing, killed some, thought they were all gone went about my business. Now they are absolutely all over the place, its nuts. I swear theres a dead corpse rotting in my crib somewhere, but there are no telltale signs of any decay and the house is pretty clean, and the house itself is 6 years old in North Ajax if that info helps at all. I want to get a spray, but I didnt want to fill my house with fumes if it could be avoided, I have living with me a couple eldery and a pomeranian that get sick if you look at em funny. Ive been trying the trick with wine and a container, but for all the flies it kills it seems like ten more take its place. Should I still be trying to locate souce of this or should I just worry about the little buggers I got flying around right now? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Are you sure they are fruit flies could they be moths? If so you have a hell of a job coming up removing all food even the sealed stuff and trying to get all the nests. Google indian meal moth.

had a problem like this last year.. turned out to be a few empty beer bottles I had in my apartment. they like that apparently. definitely find the source... check everywhere in the kitchen. as soon as you fix that, you'll be good to go

In the meantime while you are looking or are out of your house.. leave a big plate and fill it with lemon juice. That should kill a lot of them while you are out..

burn the house down before your infestation takes over your neighbourhood, and eventually your town.

do the right thing now , before its too late

think of the children!

Make a fruit fly trap and put it next to the kitchen sink. they live and lay eggs inside the drain.

Make a paper cone with a tiny opening at the end. Tape it inside a jar or plastic bottle that you cut the top off of. The bait is beer, ripe fruit etc. They go in and cant get back out.

Done it before and it works. It just takes a few days to get them all.

wow. you have a long thumbnail

Put out a bowl with some water with sugar and dish soap in it. I had the same problem, and did this and the flies were gone within a week. They go after the sugar in the water and get trapped in the soap and die.

I agree with Tricky.
Take your damn empty beer bottles back to the store you bum, i bet they are coming from there. :D

Ya, I gotta big problem, i went out since I posted this thread, just came back home. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!! I gotta few jars so Im going to try and set up the cones and ripe fruit trap all around my crib. I took out all trash, collected alll stuff from the green bin and tossed it outside. Hopefully I can get this cleared up in a few days. Im at the point where I actually may consider BH's idea to burn down the house and start from scratch, you think great gulf will mind? I'll tell them its a warranty issue, lol. Thanks much for the ideas, nuthin but luv for u cool cats :)

trapping them all alive in the jar is a bad idea.

they will all work together to free themselves, then attack in a well thought out plan.

i still say fire. fire kills bugs

Any chance you have some house plants in the area? Fungus gnats appear the same and live in the soil. When the plant gets watered they appear. Annoying as all hell but harmless :banghead:
The adults cycle is short but they lay eggs like crazy. The key is to stop the cycle.
The best thing I know that works is to get Sticky Stiks and it will kill fruit flies/gnats etc. Its like a glue board for mice in smaller form.
Not sure who carries them anymore but you can try Home Depot ( in tropical plant dept) /Cdn Tire /Walmart or a nursery.
This is what you are looking for made by Safers. http://www.buyagreenhouse.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=269 http://www.saferbrand.com/store/house-plants/5025

I worked in horticulture years ago and we used them all the time with great success.

Sounds like there is still a source. Look if anything rolled under the fridge, etc.

A glass with a small piece of fruit and covered in saran wrap works well. Leave a small opening on one spot on the edge. Each morning close the opening and release them outside. A few days of this and they'll be gone.

You said you live with elderly people and a dog.... not to sound harsh or anything but are they "accounted" for?

Get a few pet spiders/frogs, then get pet snakes and then get pet badgers and finally get a pet wolf.

Its the circle of life.

Had this problem in my place last year. Do you have any plants in the kitchen? Ones with soil? If so, the soul is bad and attracting them, helping them breed. Change the soil in the plants, you'll be fine
