Front per load....

I changed my springs to race tech and added ricor intiminators along with medium weight synth amsoil to my 2009 SV. I've noticed lately that the left side preload backs off on its own a little each ride. On longer rides it backs off enough for me to notice it pulling left on harder breaking.

Why and what do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

PS tried editing the title. Auto correct fail lol

Take your forks apart again and fix whatever was improperly assembled.

Check proper installation of the spacers.
Check pre-load.
The silver washer that sits on the spacer (attached to the pre-load srew on fork cap) should have enough tension from the spring force to prevent it from backing off.

There is usually a o-ring around those preload assemblies....see if that o-ring is still there.

+1 there should be enough tension from the spring...but perhaps the o-ring is gone now?

Thanks for the tips. Pretty sure we have it together properly. The right side is all good. Preload has never moved. I guess with winter close. I ll have all season to pull it apart :)

Why the medium weight oil? My intiminators specifically say use 5 wt amsoil.

If it was assembled properly the preload would not be backing off.

Something is amiss in that fork.

it is impossible for the bike to pull left under braking.

The forks are attached by the axle, what one does, the other will do.

Lots of forks have adjustments on one side only.

You can back one side off with no preload at all and have the other side preload bottomed out and the bike will not pull to one side or the other.

We had 5 in there to start and was still way to soft. So racetech told me to up the oil one level to see.

Ya. Ill have to take it apart once I start doing the winter mods and have another look.

Well I wouldn't be asking if I knew a lot about forks/suspensions lol

It's just how it felt riding when the left side wasn't adjusted the same.

Racetech was giving advice based on their own emulators. Racetech emulators require heavier oil and drilling the damping rod. Ricor Intiminators specify comparatively thin 5W oil and stock damping rods. If the front was still "way to soft" it's because the springs are too light for your weight and or riding style/preferences. The SV forks are far from modern, but modern SS bike forks follow the same philosophy as Ricor (thin oil, properly sprung, and let the valving do its job).

And +1 to what reciprocity said.

Edit: Did you, by any chance, drill your damping rods?
