Free Used-Oil Pickup

I was told that they take 'reasonable' amounts... In other words, 4-5l jugs, not 50l drums. The rule is there to eliminate shops from dumping large amounts onto CT. You can leave multiple containers though.

I guess it depends on the management of the stores.

I don't see why they shouldn't take the used oil, after all they're the ones charging the eco fee

there are companies out there that pay for your used oil, they go to these shops and pump out the holding tanks, so don't feel bad for canadian tire and other places that recover used oil.

hmm is there any way for them to pick up from a condo? I don't do my changes here (obviously), but I'm not sure if they have the same service in Durham Region (where my parents live/have access to a garage & do my oil changes)

"Toxic Taxi provides free pick-up of 10 to 50 litres/kilograms of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) materials from Toronto's residential customers (curbside and apartment/condos on City service)."

Looks like they pick-up from Condos too. I believe this service is limited to the City of Toronto.

Not all apartments and condos are on city waste pickup service. Many, if not most, contract their waste removal to private companies.

Safety Kleen used to buy our used oil for $0.17/L They supplied the holding tank and came and pumped it out weekly. Used oil filters also must be disposed of as hazardous waste since they are impregnated with oil, unless you crush it in a filter crusher. They you can sell them as scrap.

If they don't sell the used oil, alot of shops will use it for heat in the winter.

u need a oil burning appliance that is indirectly fired. get ready to clean flame sensors often as the dirty oil will clog everything up including nozzles.

probably have to preheat the oils as most are designed for No. 2 oil.

i still sell my waste oil, but i think they outlawed the oil burning heaters.

Can you filter them before burning? Like a paper filter maybe?

You're probably talking about the carbon right?

Each shop that had a waste oil furnace also had a furnace "guru". That old timer who know just what each clunk and puff of smoke meant. Picture the old man from "A Christmas Story". These units were constantly in need of a little tweaking, some cleaning and adjustment to keep them running right. One thing the old timers made sure of was make sure the waste engine oil was not mixed with coolant or trans fuild as they plugged up the furnace.

True. I know 10 years ago in Brampton, if you had one (we did) you could keep it but you could not install a new unit. Once it had reached it's service life it would have to be removed entirely. Maybe this is why they were so protective of it. The other place is in Barrie and I know it's still in use.

Unfortunately see above.

I drop off all my used oil/antifreeze/filters to a shop called Great Canadian Oil Change. They are at 2308 Lakeshore Blvd W. Good guys there, I take all my used fluids there and they have no issue with it whatsoever. There phone number is (416)252-7000.

Thought id let you guys know, better then waiting on the city to come by when they feel like it lol.

Most if not all Canadian tires will take your automobile waste. Call before you go but I have never had any issues in burlington.

sounds like self taught stationary engineers.

trans fluid actually is suppose to burn great. even better that engine oil.

Canadian Tire for me. Dropped off like 20L once. They were excited because some guy there uses the oil to heat his garage or something.

I just leave it outside CT after business hours.

whaddya guise do with the filters?

Any place that takes your used oil (as in Canadian Tire, Costco, etc.) will also take your used filters. I don't know about Canadian Tire but you can drop off your used tires and batteries at Costco as well, no worries they will take it. It's about a dollar a tire and 5 bucks a battery profit (maybe less for a bike battery) for them.
