Hubby and I prearranged our end of days celebrations (aka funerals) and prepaid for our final resting places as well...we opted for cremation and purchased a niche which will have a small oval picture of the two of us.

My question is this...I have a few pictures that I'm thinking of using but don't know how to edit out people in the background (we took one at some falls on Manitoulin Island but it has a bunch of sightseers that I'd like to remove)...found a couple of free editing software but don't want to download without knowing if they're any good and legit...would also like to be able to size it to the proper dimensions of the actual ceramic picture which would be 6cm x 8cm.

Any suggestions on what to use?

GIMP is free and quite powerful. I prefer photoshop but I doubt there is a free and legal way to use it..

A lot of what you are trying to do requires skill and practice. Obviously you have some time.

As for picture dimensions, printing at 300 pixels per inch is reasonable. You can do the math to figure out the number of pixels needed.

This is new from Google and something I want to try - removing people can be tricky.

Another vote for GIMP
Does everything photoshop does but FREE. Easy to find support, free or professional... but just like photoshop the learning curve is pretty steep.

Back in the good ol' days I supported a couple of ad agencies, and I turned on every graphic designer I met to GIMP. Sorry... I take GREAT pleasure seeing GNU software running on a Apple platform. Cockle warming

Is this the correct one?

I would either do the direct or Microsoft store download as I don't have a bit torrent...

GIMP like PS might be overkill and too many features for the learning curve.
The GoogleEditor is KISS.

Back in my high school days I learned exactly that, how to edit photos. This was in Photoshop.
I lost the skill since then and I would most likely be lost with any current version of PS.

I am sure there are many tools for that allow you to do this online for free.

As @GreyGhost said, I'm sure you have lost of time to get this done. Maybe learn how to do this yourself for the fun of it.

Failing that, I'm sure you can get someone local or online to do it for a small fee.

IF your workplace has a corp/enterprise license for Adobe, IT should be able to give you a license for home use. Adobe has a 60/40 rule meaning 2 locations are allowed with 1 license as long as they are not used at the same time.
Also if it's just a quick edit like a crop etc. You can download a trial version of Photoshop and use it for 30 days.

But yeah PS might be overkill as @MacDoc mentions, harder to grasp if you never used it before.

No idea about mobile apps, but if you have an iPhone anything from the Apple store would be ok to download and safe to try out.

As a final laugh, get that comedian photoshopper to do it for you, as well.

I recently saw ads/commercials for the new Pixel 8 and one its features was exactly that. Removing people out of photos. Not sure it is only on photos taken with that phone or also with others.

I'm a teacher, so we don't have licenses for anything...LOL

As I mentioned, I want to crop and edit out the general population in the background...I do have time to play around, just want to make sure whatever I'm downloading onto my desktop is safe.

I have a Samsung phone but it's old (2017).

Lol well some schools are better equipped then others, either way if you have a computer class they might have something.

If it's just a simple crop to cut down to your subject you could use the software already on your computer. If Apple Mac you can use Preview app, on the PC Windows side I think it's Photos, but definitely Paint (or MS Paint).

You can try this as well:
Canva is well trusted and legit, it's all online nothing to download. I've never used the photo editor, but the design stuff I have. It's pretty straightforward. Lots of people use it. You shouldn't have to pay for anything the free offerings do quite a bit.

This is for the final picture that will be on your final resting place?
I think this is something that you actually want to pay a pro for.

GIMP is a great program, but like all prosumer software, there is a learning curve.

Fun if you are into it, very painful if it is not your bag.

There are Reddit subs I’ve come across where people help do just that for free or a few $.

You have time to test out and see how it works out. But I assume something like that would cost maybe $100-200 and the end effect may be better.

Or opt for one of these an reserve a place in eternity.
