found a bike with extremely high kms, is it worth it?

The bike is a 1998 vfr 800...with 160,000kms.

What should get looked at when I check the bike out, just the normal sprockets, chain, tires, brakes etc? Is it even worth buying it with that many km's on it, if so, what would be a good price? It appears to be stock except for the exhaust pipe.

I think if it has that many Km's it must be maintained very well. Just check out the normal stuff. Compression test if you can. You mean BRAKES haha.
I would not pay more than $2500 for it.

The seller must know the high kms will scare off almost all buyers so he'll expect low offers, even if the bike has been meticulously maintained and is in perfectly good condition. Engine wear would be the main concern so look for any smoke coming out of the pipes and weird noises. Ask for any major service records as in the last time the valves clearances were checked and/or adjusted.

Thanks, also just read through the VFR800 thread.

Going to see it on Tuesday and bringing a mechanic with me to give it a better look over. Hopefully it is in decent shape :)

Offer $1000, and doing him a favour angle. lol

The 'I'm doing you a favor' angle is the quickest way to gaurantee that your offer will be rejected. At least I would close the door fast on you.

You have to determine what a relatively low mileage VFR is worth vs this one and then determine if the difference in price is worth the risk that the high mileage bike is worn out and will need expensive repairs while you own it. If you're able to do routine maintenance and repairs then potential cost might not be a huge issue for you. If a dealer is going to be doing all this work then it could cost you a fortune.

Also, remember that on resale at some point this could well be a 200,000km bike that no one is going to purchase from you.

See this thread from another forum re potential cost..........
