For those of you who filter

Best response ever.

I've heard the the whole "it's illegal to lane split" even from friends who justify "yeah if I can't get ahead, you'll have to wait, and if not I'll ram into you".

Some people seriously think, even when calm, that breaking someone's limbs, vegetating them or straight up murdering them is okay because they wanted to "bud in line". That kind of logic confuses me; it's like smokers thinking it's good for them and fat people who think they're healthy.

Those same people tend to try and create analogies between speeding and murder, which are patently absurd. A more correct thing to say would be something like, "If you're breaking the law by lane splitting, then don't get upset if someone who doesn't expect you to be there accidentally hits you with his car."

Minor point: it's "butt" in line, not "bud". As in "headbutt", except with using your elbow to cut in line, or vehicle to cut into a lane. I think traffic would be a lot saner if everyone didn't cherry-pick the regulations we wanted to follow (or ignore). An actual citizen's forum (as opposed to the "taxpayer" or "licensee" we've been reduced to) to address practical changes to regulations would be nice, which would hopefully reduce the current disproportionate influence of lobby groups and insurance companies.

Dream on, I know.

Thanks, Flywheel. You beat me by about 10 minutes. I was just reading to the end of the thread and was going to correct the "buddies".

An elimination of the "me first" attitude displayed by the vast majority or people on our roadways would also go a long way toward improving traffic flow.

Good luck with that........

Yeah, i know, but it's the single thing that would do the most to improve overall traffic flow. For example the people who run all the way down the merge lane, before forcing their way into traffic when the lane runs out, don't realize that they are likely the single biggest cause of traffic congestion on slow moving highways. The ripple effect of slowing down one car becomes stopped cars, a Km behind them.

No argument there.

But how can we expect anything to change when, IMO, motorcylists are the worst for the 'me first attitude'?

Nothing will ever change. Riders will continue to have drivers become angry with them so long as they act that way.

By calling them on it, when they exhibit that sort of behaviour. Ostracizing works too ;)

It's illegal to speed, next time you try to pass me on the 401 at 101+km/h don't be upset when I try to run you off the road.

I don't give them the finger as I zoom-by.

I don't condone what the cagers are doing, but if you're gonna poke a lion with a stick expect a bad consequence

I like to give the ragers the finger at a red light when filtering to the front and knowing for sure that they cant get/catch up to me further down the road.
U're stuck in not moving traffic cuz ur in a cage, too bad and deal with it, don't honk at me cuz i dont care. I take watever responsibility and safety at my own will if i get caught thats all.

And how long do you fight the good fight before you concede that the lunatics are running the asylum?

It worked pretty well when i lived in Edmonton because the community is so small that everyone knows you so way easier to call people on being an idiot. When i moved back to Toronto it took me a whole summer to wrap my brain around how many squids there are here. So yeah, good luck.

I see filtering and lane splitting as my little reward for freezing my as out there while the cagers are so comfy inside their cars sipping on their camomile tea - Effort equals reward

;)

Once they start using the passing lane properly and obeying the rules of the road, I will stop lane splitting and filtering

Well actually it is a line and you do have to wait your turn, under the law, except in very specific circumstances.

It is not a line for the following reasons:

1) The traffic system is too complicated to simplify as a "line".
2) People are going in different directions with different starting points and end points.
3) Passing is allowed (i.e. getting ahead of someone in traffic) space and safety permitting.
4) If you "bud" in front of someone at a line only to cross them and be out of their way, this is not seen as a "bud" proper. i.e. if there is a long line for a movie theatre or airline desk, and you need to cross the line, technically you have temporarily budded to cross the line, but because the net effect is nothing, it is not a bud. If filtering's net effect is no delay to anyone in a (situational) line, then it is not budding. We are afterall not racing home to bone their wives!
5) Where the net effect is a delay to others, i.e. filtering down the left turn lane, that is understandably a cause for offence, as taking up a left turn space will actually delay others and possible exclude someone from chance to turn. Advanced green arrow situations may differ, but generally as a bike can't exactly tear it away on a cold tire hard turn, a bike is likely going to slow someone down in a left turn situation if they filtered to the front.

So it's a series of queues.

i do it almost everyday in a one lane street and most of the cars are stuck because they are waiting for a left turn. I just want to go straight. Some cagers have tried to block me, but they end up leaving the other side of the lane wide open. so I just go around them and just smile at them... lol...

Filtering in a single "line" situation is illegal, unless every car you passed was signalling left, and you had enough room. In a single "line" situation if you pass any car not signalling left you will be dinged with breaking 150 of the HTA.

If however you can argue that there is enough room for 2 "lines (not lanes) of vehicles, then you may get a pass, but you will have to argue it fiercely. Single lane filters are tricky, so be alert for the laws you may be breaking.

Also if any vehicle within 30m of the intersection is not turning left and is moving toward the intersection, and you pass them, in your own lane or not, you are also breaking the law (140).

Though many forms of filtering are not illegal in Ontario, some forms are, so take care. For example, in a multilane situation filtering in the left lane while cars are moving in the left lane is illegal 148(7)(b), while filtering in the right lane next to slow moving vehicles is not illegal (with the caveat it is safe and you have room) 147(1), 148(1)

Sorry for decending into a legal comment, as the OP intended this thread to be free of legal wrangling, but in all fairness some have already pipped in with the unbiquitous "it's illegal, I'll run you off the road" comments already. For those that think it is totally legal, it must be said it is not, and for those that think it is illegal in all instances, thus warranting their rage, it is not.

The issue of rage is attached to the principle of filtering, where the "budding" in line argument is more germane to the discussion.

As Rob stated, legal or not, cops let a lot of stuff slide, and if lax enforcement is the start of a cultural shift to the acceptance of filtering, than the point is valid....if it is not enforced, it is socially accepted, or on its way. The legality almost becomes moot in this instance.

What the hell are you guys talking about?!?!?! You know roads are divided into lanes for a reason right?!?! Highways and roads have fast lanes and slow lanes! Even single lane roads allow passing in the oncoming lane!!!!

What the hell "me first attitude" are you talking about?!?!?! I swear, you better never pass a single car on the way to work ever before you spout off about "me first" attitudes!

Pure hyperbolic nonsense!
