Usually when I filter and get to the front, sometimes the front car has left a huge gap, or even if I get to the front and I haven't filtered I usually pull waaaaay over to the side, essentially leaving the lane open to "filtering cars". Personally I have no problem with them close to me as long as we are both aware of each other. I also don't want to impede any driver looking to make a right turn. Additionally at the front of the line I am vulnerable, so I prefer to leave as much lane open as possible in case some cell distracted driver plows through into the intersection.

If a car wants to filter, so be it, I have no problem with it.

PS the analogy of a Tim Horton's line doesn't work:

1) Think Service Ontario line with different queues, different number systems, different starting points, different destination, different needs, goals, etc. Traffic is more akin to that.
2) I have every right to bud, or move ahead in the line, that is the point of PASSING!!!!! Traffic laws allow for passing, essentially to move ahead of someone else depending on your speed, destination, or what have you. If you hate budding so much, you need to ride the street car everywhere, where they never pass each other. And when one slows down, expect a conga line of street cars! Someone like you would freak out if you were on the normal bus and the express bus passed you!

So easy on the "budding" morality, it doesn't apply.

Last time I was at Service Ontario I got a ticket, specific to my need and end goal. My ticket was called before 40% of the other people who were in the waiting room before me. Looks like I budded, jumped the queue or filtered.

In reality I was literally filtered based on my specific requirements.

Same thing happens at the busy Timmy's by my work; multiple lines. If door knobs all choose to line up in the one line nearest the door (demarcated by chevrons on the floor), and overlook the three other (empty) lines with waving cashiers, that is their problem. Some people come straight in from the door and head to the furthest (open) cashier and jump the brainless vegged out masses in the first line.

Once again, even at Timmy's the morality of budding is murky and is dependent on circumstances.

Except Service Ontario called you up to the front based on a service priority ticketing system rather than you taking that liberty yourself. Plus you didn't turn around and flip the bird to people who were still waiting either.

You are right, that is not the correct response.

Then again a friendly wave and smile is what really makes them spazz out!

Best policy I have found is stop and take a moment to calmly chat and explain while the light is still red. The worst I have gotten in that instance is, "yeah well you better go look at the rules (doesn't know about the HTA) yourself buddy"

I fail to comprehend your logic. Don't be upset if someone runs you off the road? So filtering (that doesn't involve any harm to anyone) justifies hitting and possibly killing someone on their bike? I hope you never speed as someone may rage and run you off the road.

That would be the discrepancy. Traffic lights arent a line in the conventional sense of all waiting for your turn to be served, nor is traffic congested by an accident that has everything stopped for miles. When i filter i'd always make sure i left quicker then the car at the front, the distinction that i am in no way impeding their progress or life. When traffic is backed up for miles me tip toeing through stoped cars on my bike does nothing that will have an effect on traffic.

In traffic you are not "waiting in line" as you are not waiting for your turn. Angry cagers DO feel like it is a line, as people feel it is unfair that they have to wait and you dont, so expect the odd one to treat you accordingly.

Well actually it is a line and you do have to wait your turn, under the law, except in very specific circumstances.

I filter and lane split every day to and from work, but I live in California, where it is common place and not illegal. Most people are very courteous, and will even move out of the way if there isn't enough room for you to get by. The worst I've gotten have been people at the front wanting to 'race' me (or prevent me from going first?), but this has only happened twice in the past four years (not counting the 'friendly' race I had with a GT-R last week).

i do it almost everyday in a one lane street and most of the cars are stuck because they are waiting for a left turn. I just want to go straight. Some cagers have tried to block me, but they end up leaving the other side of the lane wide open. so I just go around them and just smile at them... lol...

You're doing it wrong.

If you're that regular at it, beware that the police may be onto you at some point. If they receive enough calls of "Motorcycle is doing [insert offense here] at [insert time of day here]" they might show up at that spot and give you ****.

If you're on a grid, try it on different streets, mix it up and never use the same street on the same day of the next week. Cagers won't anticipate your moves in the sense that they will have the reflex to block you and you'll likely never see a single cop.

Personally if anyone were to block me, I'd just go up on the sidewalk like a boss.

Had the crazy soccer mom thing but not from filtering or splitting but doing proper lane changes in traffic on the highway. Friggen scary had to pull off to the shoulder and my buddy parked his bike in front of her and got off and yelled at her for almost running me over.

I've done the filtering very slowly and through the space between cars and side walks. Most people don't know the differnce between a bike, scooter and ebike. Never had a problem yet with doing it that way.

I've heard the the whole "it's illegal to lane split" even from friends who justify "yeah if I can't get ahead, you'll have to wait, and if not I'll ram into you".

Some people seriously think, even when calm, that breaking someone's limbs, vegetating them or straight up murdering them is okay because they wanted to "bud in line". That kind of logic confuses me; it's like smokers thinking it's good for them and fat people who think they're healthy.
