The worse part is that it's a small job, not a half million addition. It seems contractors are throwing highball prices and if they don't get the job there's another one down the street.
On the other hand if the price is cheap what's the catch?
You save by being your own general but you have no clout over the trades because you're a one shot deal. A general adds to the price but can pull more strings and hopefully coordinate trades and materials.
Off the shelf materials can be stockpiled but if the job calls for a new window you might wait a month or two.
