first track day recommendations

I've never bought a brand new suit. always buy used. There's always people putting on weight, losing weight, getting out the sport. Kijiji and the classifieds on here are a great starting point. Most I ever paid was $700 for a Berik suit. Absolutely lovely piece of kit. Boots I buy brand new now, but my first set were used. Gloves are a brand new thing. Helmet is personal choice. Only buy used if you can be as sure as a sure person, who has won awards for being sure about everything, that it hasn't been dropped at any point in it's life. I have a great 2 piece Suomy suit for sale atm for $300 http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?170299-Suomy-2-piece-leathers-suit . Loads of life left in it and never being down. There's tons of stuff out there if you want to find it.

As for a track? Not Mosport big track (Mosport RDT is a great beginner track)or Calabogie. I honestly believe TMP is a good starter track. Green never seems to be full, it's flat so you can see where you're going, and it's relatively cheap compared to other tracks. But that assumes you find your own gear first.

Good luck.

I'm only doing tmp cuz I don't got $1000 to spend on fast or racer5

TMP intro to track school is a good option to get some instruction to the track, but dont dismiss FAST or Racer5 because you are under the impression that they cost more.

I think there are cheaper options for both schools.

I know that during the show season Racer5 the four day course with a race license, track fees, race entry fees and the bike was $1000. But thats 4 very extensive days on track with bike rental, trackside support, etc.

The day long intro program at Mosport RDT track is only $379 with gear rental being only $50/day.
That includes the bike, instructors, a whole day on track with debriefs, a track walk and a morning in class session.

On top of that if you get a $100 spring service at Speedworx you get the course for only $299!
factor in that you dont have to worry about logitics, obtaining gear, destroying your bike, and that its a day long course its not really any more expensive.

Contact Fast as I am sure they have cheaper options than the $1000 that you think they might cost.

As I (and someone else) said above, Mosport RDT is a great learning track. Probably more fun than TMP because it has a bit of elevation change. If Racer 5 are doing courses at Mosport RDT I'd reccomend that **** all day long.

BTW... Fawaz/Racer 5 is the only school that offers a learn/license/race package that includes fuel, instruction and assistance all weekend.

You won't get an independent race class at any other school. I took Phase 5 last year and it improved wonders, I wish Fawaz was around when I did my first track day way back when.

I've never bought a brand new suit. always buy used.

I dunno. Thinking about how much I sweat in my suit, and I am not a really sweaty guy typically, I think I prefer my suits new. :-D YMMV.

To the OP, check out Sportbike Trackgear, they seem willing to ship to Canada and seem to always have great deals on closeouts and "last year's" models. Chech their website and youtube channel. I have not dealt with them at all myself yet but always check out their vids and reviews. Haven't needed any gear lately though.

Speedworx is selling a great race suit for $600. For a little more you can get into custom suits.

I have gotten lucky twice in that I found an off the rack suit, at blowout prices.

Trust me, every suit I have bought has hardly been worn. One of them still had that new leathery smell. Now helmets are a different matter. But each to their own. I've just foind it a useful way of getting high end gear for cheap. And I wear underarmour so i'm not really touching it.

And thanks for the heads up. I'll never buy a used suit from you. :lmao:

My first track day was at calabogie. Probably 10 bikes crashed on that day for the novice group. Remember to take it slow first couple of laps AFTER the parade laps. I was on my ex500 and I did the parade laps behind an instructor...(pretty much the entire first 20 min slot).

However, my first lap I was on my own, i saw the straight and gunned it too much. Got scared entering my turn 1 because I have NEVER went so fast heading into a turn. I target fixated and off the track I went headed straight to the wall. Luckily I remembered the rule of not freaking out and grab as much brake as I could, I stayed upright and stopped a few feet from the wall. That was the scariest moment in my life!

I went with an intermediate rider that day and he did follow me out for the first "by myself" slot, he rode behind me and saw the whole thing. After we went back to the pits. He told me, " you have to believe in your bike, if you believe it can make the turn, it will make the turn ". It was true, I got scared because i had never felt the brake take so long to slow my bike down.

Just remember you have an entire day ahead of you. Don't gun it the first time you see a straight away.
