first track day recommendations

hello, I've decided to do a track day this year. i'll probably go with pro6 because they rent out gear which i need. first question, are they the only ones that rent gear. i know i should get my own, but its hard to convince my wife to let me spend 1000 dollars on a suit lol. second question is which track should i go to, i like mosport, because its close and the layout doesn't look very technical, but is there others that i should look at. BTW i've been riding for 3 years on a 2009 SV650S which is the bike i will be using, and i think i'm ready for the track. and excited to get out there

thanks

diego

I don't think pro 6 rents suits at mosport but check.

Mosport is a fast track. It's a fantastic track but fast, elevation changes and blind corners can be somewhat intimidating for a first timer.

Shannonville and Cayuga are flat but surface is less desirable.

Bogie is beautiful but also pretty technical with elevation changes and blind corners.

Pro6 runs what I consider to be the best trackdays in Ontario, so going with them will always be a good decision.

As meme said above, Mosport is not the best beginer track, although the track 'map' if you will looks basic, it is far from it, fast is the operative word there. In this post http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforu...02-The-Beginner-s-Guide-to-Ontario-Track-Days some of the more seasoned guys break down the difficulty of the tracks around us and I would take what they say into consideration.

If you do go with Pro6 for Mosport be sure to mention it is your first time there and pay the extra few $ for their new to the track orientation, that way you can follow someone who really knows what they are doing to show you the lines.

This is no longer a choice, it is mandatory and a really good thing to do because they will take some of the stress and pressure to go fast right away and show you the proper lines. I did it and recommend it

OP I'm taking the June 22 "intro to track school" at TMP. You should do some sort of schooling first IMO. The price is fairly reasonable but I'm not sure they rent out gear. What are you looking for, just a suit? Suits can be had for $500 if you know where to look.

Intro to track. 168 plus hst for 2.5 hours if I'm reading that correctly do you know if that is sessions?

Thanks! Read that but is it an open session or 20 min per hour like a track day? Friend took the school but wants more track time before signing up for a track day.

Get in touch with Fawaz at Racer 5..... if you're doing one of his track days or bike rentals, he might be able to help you out with gear. they do trackdays at most tracks, but they also do it at Grand Bend every thursday before SOAr race weekend. He has instructors on hand to help all the time, and will give you everythin you need.

Or you can do a solo day at Grand Bend Motorplex. Sunny and Drew at trackside cuts often help out at those events as well.

Its great to see newer people coming to the track...
I feel that Mosport (the big track) can be very scary for the first time out however i would strongly suggest some track school may it be racer 5 fast or what have you.
also if the school is not the thing for you consider the smaller easier tracks shannonville (nelson or Fabi ) the mosport rider training track or tmp
all these tracks are fairly easy to navigate Pro 6 do offer some of the best track days in the country but i dont think the visit the smaller tracks often
Gp bikes offer the smaller RDT track at mosport which is geared towards new to track riders.
I hope this helps a bit

Where are these places I can go look for good deals on suits. And thanks for the responses everyone, gonna probably do mosport with pro6 or riders choice. I have family in bowmanville, so I can sleep there the night before and get a good nights rest

Never heard of "Rapide" suits, but here, from $229 one piece: http://www.ironpony.com/ironponydir...ece Suits/Class2/Suits/Class1/STREET PRODUCTS

They ship to Canada with no problems, I've bought a helmet from them before.

Edit: these are actually "Zero-60" suits ("Rapide" is the model) and I've heard the name before. Anyway, good luck!

I've seen speed and strength, joe rocket and teknik suits go on sale at royal distribution. Also kijiji if you get lucky on your size.

Mosport will be fine, especially since you'll be required to do the parade laps with an instructor. Mosport is incredibly wide, and at a novice pace you'll really enjoy the layout. You'll get to wind out your bike on the long straight, see some cool elevation changes and practice braking smoothly through the hairpin. Work on being smooth and learning the lines at a comfortable pace, and it'll be a ton of fun!

I've got an extra suit and if it fits you, you're welcome to borrow it... just send me a PM. I'd suggest you get a back protector, but if you're the right fit you can swap with me between sessions. I'll be there both July 5th and 8th.

Don't do TMP's intro to track school. It's great for someone who doesn't know what they're doing... I took it. But after I took a REAL school, TMP's is peanuts compared to it.

Go to a proper trackday and get some proper formal instruction for the day.

I am going to suggest a true race school rather than just a trackday.
It's amazing the confidence you can find in having the physics of motorcycle turning and braking explained to you. Taking the emotion and anxiety out of track riding, and simply understanding the physics equations of riding afterwards can be liberating and you'd be amazed at what kind of riding is possible once you understand they why's and how's. You will learn to act instead of re-act.

Try Racer5 or FAST School. Both of whom have full gear and bike rentals.

I've never bought a brand new suit. always buy used. There's always people putting on weight, losing weight, getting out the sport. Kijiji and the classifieds on here are a great starting point. Most I ever paid was $700 for a Berik suit. Absolutely lovely piece of kit. Boots I buy brand new now, but my first set were used. Gloves are a brand new thing. Helmet is personal choice. Only buy used if you can be as sure as a sure person, who has won awards for being sure about everything, that it hasn't been dropped at any point in it's life. I have a great 2 piece Suomy suit for sale atm for $300 http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?170299-Suomy-2-piece-leathers-suit . Loads of life left in it and never being down. There's tons of stuff out there if you want to find it.

As for a track? Not Mosport big track (Mosport RDT is a great beginner track)or Calabogie. I honestly believe TMP is a good starter track. Green never seems to be full, it's flat so you can see where you're going, and it's relatively cheap compared to other tracks. But that assumes you find your own gear first.

Good luck.
