First bike. First rider.

Hi everyone!

I just wanna start by saying that english isn’t my first language, so I apologize if I am not very understandable. I’ll try my best to be as clear as possible.

I’m starting my riding lesson this summer. I’ve always wanted to ride and this is probably because of my two parents who were riding when they were younger, but three kids later…goodbye motorcycles!

Two years ago at fifty my Dad decided to buy himself a brand new Harley Davidson Dyna Fat Bob! Since then, my parents are just like little kids. My Dad just talk about this and is always looking for accessories and etc…

I love to do motorcycle with my dad, but I’ve decided that I wanna have my own.

I will take my moto to go to work and in my daily travel. Also, I will probably go for longer rides with my dad and his friends. So, I need a bike who’s able to keep up with them (They do not drive like crazy, they respect the limits, but If I have to overrun through cars on the highway, or If I need to react as fast as I can, I need something who can do that).

As you must know, I prefer custom, classic style. I not much of a sportbike lover. But, I am not tattooed Harley. So, all of your suggestions are welcome! I’ve been reading a lot of forums, reviews, youtube review, etc…but I’ve wanted to ask my question for my situation

I am a 22 years old, 5’8 woman, and I weight 135 pounds.

The two bikes I had in mind right now are the Honda VT750 Phantom and the Yamaha V-Star Custom.

Also, my budget give me the opportunity to buy a brand new bike and everything. I’ve look around the dealers near me and they don’t seem to sale those bike. Either they are very old or have a lot of kilos.

So, I need you help!!! What are your suggestion!!

Thanks a lot!!

Welcome To the forum, and good luck in your search. Just remember your first bike is not your last bike. You will go through the motions and in time you will have a better understanding of what you really want. I thought the same thing you are thinking when I started so I bought a Yamaha Vstar 650. After two years riding, I realized that cruisers have limitations too. It puts a lot of strain on my lower back on longer rides. So here is what I suggest, again that's my opinion so other members, feel free to criticize.

1. Don't buy brand new, it is likely that you will cause some damage to it because you are new to riding. (Noob mistakes)

2. Don't buy a very old bike either, because again you are new and won't know your way around the mechanics.

3. Whatever you choose you will end up getting used to in time so I am not going to suggest a particular engine size. But whatever you choose you will want more in a couple of years so keep that in mind.

4. Buy a $2500 -$3500 bike and leave room to learn and upgrade as you go.

I realized after 2 years of riding that I want a standard bike and not a custom cruiser, I like the Vstrom and BMW and I think I will get that next. Good luck.

Welcome. I agree with the advice above. I know very little about cruisers or custom bikes but a standard motorcycle is probably a good place to start and figure out what you want and don't want out of a bike. Good luck!

Btw, your english is really good. There are kids who were born here that are near impossible to understand when they type lol.

I started with 1984 honda magna 500cc one. Was good learning experience but the old bike caused a lot of headaches.

I wouldnt mind something like that but more modern. I saw that yamaha had a new model coming out that I like the looks. Can't remember what its called

welcome

My friends wife just got a Harley Sportster 883, it's a really nice bike and she's about the same size as you. We were out on Saturday and she had no problem keeping up and flipping through the gears. They're lots of Sportsters for sale around the 3-6k area.

Good luck!

I just picked up a Vstar Classic 650, loving it! Not sure about highway, but feels like it will not be a problem. Loud as hell, low seat and cheap on insurance. Honda 750's are similar in class. Lots out there and given you see them with high mileage tells you they last too.

If you can ride and have a decent level of comfort, I'm told that a Vstar 1100 is only about 50 lbs heavier than the 650 and you won't out grow it as fast. Was too much for me, but if you're used to your Dad's Harley, it might be worth taking one for a test drive to see how it feels.

I am not an expert or veteran rider, but buying used as a learning bike makes sense to me. Save some of those funds for your next bike, cause you will upgrade. Take you Dada to look at some with you, making of a great afternoon if you ask me.

Best of luck,
