Fire Department bills me for nothing

I was issued a similar charge for a recent ride to the hospital, i claimed it through insurance and they paid for it. When i called the hospital to ask WTF, they advised that it is an administrative charge from their end, it is not an EMS charge.

As for Fire parking in grocery store parking lots and the like on duty, can't they buy their groceries before they come into work. Why are they using taxpayers dollars to drive the "aparatus" to the store and waste time at the store? Also what happens if they are involved in an accident on the way to the store, 1 we are down an aparatus, 2 who pays for that? Most don't know that Toronto Fire Fighters are issued 8 hours mandatory sleep time, must be nice to sleep at work.

Fire fighters work as a team hence taking the big red truck to Loblaws. If a call comes in they leave the shopping carts and deal with the call. Not so easy if the Bubba the truck driver is off shopping and the guys have to wait for him to come back before they saddle up.

I don't mind them driving to the plaza. The big rigs need to get checked out and driven, especially if they've been sitting for a while. What I object to is them blocking the view of people exiting the store and cars travelling through the driveway in front. It's an accident waiting to happen. There are plenty of double spots or even 8 or 10 double spots in a row where the trucks could easily park. If they need help I will pull the truck into the spot for them.

Anyway this billing thing seems to be the first step towards privatization.

sounds worse than rogers!

Nothing is worse than Rogers. Whens the last time you calculated how much you give them a year, i would take the FD bill anyday

Fyi, if the attending doctor at the base hosptial deems your ride in the ambulance a critical call, you dont pay anything.

As for the comments about the fire truck, if the truck is involved in an accident a spare truck is put in place. And insurance covers the damage of any vehicle involved in an accident, just like all of you on the roads.
And i dont know where you get your facts about 8 hours mandatory time of sleeping. Lol.

Sure on the night shift we can retire after a certain time to sleep, but with call volumes wayyy up our sleep is interupted regularly. A night shift could have us up at 11 pm, than 1 am, 2 am 3 am and nothing till 5 am.
Or if its a working fire, were up all night till the morning crew relieves us.

Dont think it's all lollipops and puppy dogs in our world ...

I just don't think that taxpayers should be on the hook for insurance premiums and such when the truck was not actually on a call, not too meantion implementing another truck into the rotation because of trip to get hotdogs and hamburgers, get your food before you get to work, that is all i'm saying.

How do you have a night shift, Toronto is on 24hr shifts? If you are not a Toronto firefighter then i guess you may not have a nap time, but i am positive they are allowed to sleep in Toronto, but i was wrong on the hours (its 6 hours as per the Fire Chief) but it must occur after 1pm.

Also don't get me wrong, my family is full of firefighters and i am well aware of the call frequency and the health issues associated with the job.

Ahhh im not getting into this debate.
Lets just say another truck does not go into rotation to get lunch/dinner. It is called "being in service" which means we are ready to accept all calls when were out.
And your 100% wrong about Toronto fire and what someone told you about their "sleep allowance" is.
It's actually quite comical what some of you guys are posting, and what you think our job entails, and how you think you "it should" be.

If that is a "fact" than you would know Toronto's operating guidelines, if your family is full of FF;s.

We all know each other, or know someone who works for another dept etc.

I hear ya. I get the same ****.

Holy crap, what a load of *****...... I don't know where you come up with these fairy tales about rotating trucks for food runs and sleep allowances....... I'm in my 28th year with Toronto Fire, and some of the ******** being posted here about our job is hilariously untrue and the first time I've ever heard of these "allegations".....Some of the posters should actually do some research before posting garbage they've "heard" from unreliable sources or by what they see on tv .... maybe things will change when we get our 2010 contract..... ours expired in 2009 .... as far as being billed for trucks, we respond when we're dispatched , simple as that.... we don't invoice anyone .... just submit the info on our reports ,and that's the end of it for us ....what the city does with that info is their business ..... You wouldn't believe some of the stupid things people call 911 for .... and we go investigate them all , no matter how ridiculous ... Sorry for the rant , couldn't take it any longer .... Inferno's carried it well , but not getting enough support ...... Cheers , Les

Phew. Thanks Les.

The biggest joke is the paramedic comments.

Idiots will always believe bs if it sounds good. My wife used to work at the beer store and she got sick of people asking her how much beer she was getting for free. I have friends that work at the Chrysler plant in Brampton and they are sick of being accused of being lazy and overpaid. It happens in every job people ***** because they feel like they are getting ****** over and other people have it to easy.

Why dont u enlighten us Mr fireman. I'm sure we're all excited to learn more

Sent from my phone using my paws

oh man , don't get me started with the paramedics ..... I'm just getting tired of hearing a bunch of idiots trashing my profession, when they have absolutely no clue what they're talking about..... ZERO ! We see and experience a lot of horrible things ..... I've lost friends and family members (my DAD) to firefighting related cancers... One , who I started the job with, died at 39 of job related cancer..... I'm not going to apologize to anyone , if I try to get a wink of sleep after 11pm and having already been on duty for 16hrs, or for getting some groceries , while on duty ..... We don't have any idea what our shift is going to entail, where we'll be working , training, in service , out of service , etc , until we actually report for duty..... We pick up our groceries when we know for sure ...... we are on-call the entire time, and get called away very frequently, to run calls, some legit, some nonsense..... but we all go, as a crew , every time we're called, no matter where we are , or what we're doing....... we're paid to be available and ready, which we are , 24 hours per day, 365 days per year..... I'm working Christmas day this year , fourth year in a row , for 24 hours, making 1.3 times the regular rate of pay....... not triple overtime, or whatever one of the morons "heard" from their ill informed buddy..... A little research, people ...... And yes, it's a good job, but I don't want my kids to do it ..... I want them to live long healthy lives...... end of 2nd rant...... Cheers, Les
