Heading down to the finger lakes in NY and thinking of staying at the Holiday Inn in Waterloo NY. Any one ever been down here? Heading down with a few friends for a few days. Will be taking the 20 from Buffalo. This will be my first weekend trip. Any suggestions on sites to see, places to eat in or around the area.

Thanks everyone.

Pass through letchworth state park either on your way down or on the way back.

Glen Curtis museum is good, Hammondsport?

Watkins Glen State Park

If you shopping for clothing try to get the local info. Some counties don't have tax on clothes under $100.

Skip 20 and find your way down a few miles south to 20A for a much more scenic road. Take 20A through East Aurora and Warsaw until you hit 36, and then head south on 36 for a few minutes. The entrance to Letchworth will be on your right just past the motel and just before you enter Mt Morris.

At the bottom end of Letchworth you can take 436 from Portageville to Dansville, where you hook up 63 to Wayland, and then take 21 to just past Naples, and then catch 245 through Rushville and Stanley to hook up with 20 in Geneva, and then on to Waterloo. The roads are all fairly good pavement, plenty of bends and scenery to enjoy.

Alternately, for a shorter route that still takes you through Letchworth, take 20A from East Aurora only as far as Warsaw, then head south from the center of town on 19 until you hit 19A, and folloow 19A down to the bottom end of Letchworth State Park. Take the park roads back up northeast until you reach 63 just north of Mt Morris, head north on 63 to Leicester and follow 20A east from there until you connect with 20 just outside Canandaigua. From there you're just 30 minutes from Waterloo.

Turbo is right, take the 20A to for a nice piece of road.

Letchworth State park is definetly worth checking out. I would also stop in at Watkins Glen racetrack. Very nice trip on a bike... A friend and I have done it in one day, and I have done it with my father in law over 4 days twice.

Thanks guys.

The group I'm going with will be leaving on a Friday morning and coming back Sunday afternoon. That's the plan anyways. Get there Friday sometime. Saturday tour around the lakes, then leave Sunday and take our time coming home.

With the different route suggested we just take a little longer getting there and have a bit more fun while we are at it too.

only 5 more days henry!!!!! Saddle up and ride brother

sounds like a good route - it's on my radar - if it rains the Corning Glass museum is down that way as well and apparently very interesting. I suspect there will be lots of accommodation around Watkins if no race is on,

BTW all riders on the go - this seems a superb resource...

just type in your destination anywhere in the world

and this is just $41 a night near your route

Thanks Macdoc i will definetly be using this from now on.

Good - I was amazed I had never heard of it and means a lot less expensive and more interesting places to stay around the world for GF and I.

Always bugged me not having something between camping and too expensive motels. And I would guess most will have Wifi too.

Report back on it. Let me know when you are leaving as I might tag in for the ride down - been itching to go to area and to the Corning Museum.
Where are you leaving out of?

BTW make sure everyone has passport and remind everyone there are random and quite exhaustive checks at the border ( pure luck of the draw ) and it might cost 1/2 hour.

Packing things in clear plastic bags can make any inspection a lot easier.

Mine was easy - if buddy had been pulled over we'd still be there ( he tended to carry way too much stuff ).

Everything has been booked already with the accommodations. i was a little worried it being so close the the fourth of July that we decided to book early.

We are leaving out of KW on friday morning just after 9 am. Sure more then welcome to tag along. We are not 100% sure on the route yet as weather will tell what the route will be. But we are crossing at Fort Erie and will most likely slab it down so we can get through the border.
Yes thanks I will make sure to bug the boys about getting all their passports and any other paper work they need togther so they are on time. I will mention the clear bags cause that's a good idea. Not to sure yet what to all pack but will be figuring that out quick.
Oh I understand about wait times at the border, My parents and us kids ( when I was still a kid ) waited at the Mexico border for well over 29 hours. So I'm not too worried.

You're more than welcome to tag along just let us know.
Thanks for the tips.

Every time I'm in that area with family, we always go to Doug's Fish Fry ... http://goo.gl/maps/mUv0 .. excellent food.
It's just about 40minutes east of Waterloo in the town called Skaneateles.... http://goo.gl/maps/Z1R9

We always stay at Holiday Inn in Auburn. (a bit more east from Waterloo)... http://goo.gl/maps/GnVJ
The one in Waterloo is not bad, but the one in Auburn is nicer.

Have a nice trip down there

Can I suggest it might be better to cross at Lewiston - closer for you and fewer hassles in my opinion.

It's not the wait times that can be a problem its a random inspection - and they give you the third degree in the immigration office and you are not allowed to see what they are doing with the bike and luggage.

Thinking seriously about this most likely as mostly solo but might meet up for riding part of the way. What is itinerary at this point.
You go right by me on your way down from KW tho depending on which bridge I might leave early and do Ridge Road etc part of the way.

I tend to like to get away 7 ish or earlier. Still thinking about it. Anyone taking smart phone/email etc.?

id caution you on using Lewiston to cross. google "border wait times" before you hit the border to check how long the crossing will takes and how many lanes are open. I have a nexxus passes so im not affected but nothing sucks more than getting there and having to wait 45 minutes in the heat.

same risk applies to Buffalo and the border wait times info is often ********
I sat in traffic for 1/2 hour last week when the site said there was no wait time.
