They couldn't crack TOR, they had *very* limited success in de-anonymizing users. Snowden's leaks covered this. The very nature of how the TOR network operates makes it exceedingly difficult to track and identify users.

iirc there is a mega complex in the US and Australia that monitors every fax, email, and phone call record. It screens for key words and flags things. They record everything, so they got you uncovered.

If you were a smart user of silkroad you were using multiple levels of encryption, not just tor. Anyone using just tor and buying the illegal items off silkroad (yes there was some legal items on there) then you deserve to get caught.
