Fault when "laying down" bike in the GTA?

+1 million.

That is the same excuse as "loud pipes, saves lives" Its just an excuse to not take the blame for your own fault

If your bike hit the vehicle, Then you may be able to argue that you did everything in your powers to avoid the car turning illegally in front of you.

The only time you lay down your bike to avoid an accident, is if you are sliding under a hard surface (Jack Knived transport :D) that you could not brake for and would take you out if you are upright, Then your awesome lol

Yeah. Laying down a bike is just an excuse.

Instead of hitting whatever is in front of you, you hit what is below you. Brakes and rubber work better than plastics on concrete.

I love how you can see the ropes and the trolley the horse is being pulled on. Is this some sort of Bollywood comdey similar to the Charlie Sheen movies of the 90's?

How do insurance companies view a situation where a motorcyclist lays down his bike to avoid someone turning left in front of him? No contact between the two vehicles. Some question about whether it was actually necessary to lay the bike down since the bike never slid to the point in the road where the car was. Single vehicle accident, 100% on the rider? Or 100% on the car driver, "turn not in safety." Or is it less clear cut than either?

Let me guess, you ride a Harley (or sheepishly ride a Jap Scrap cruiser and hope you are accepted into the pirate club)?
If not...you need to ride a Vespa or CBR125 for a few more seasons until you stop being a threat to everyone around you (Harley rider wouldn't care, so there's no hope for them)

single vehicle accidents are always 100% the operators fault.

Unless there's a political motivation behind it. Remember, the push to pass 172 was helped by Premier Dad McWeasel performing for the camera's with the widow of the truck driver who died on the 400 after he jack knifed across six lanes of traffic before he "laid it down"...without ever contacting the evile street racers that cut him off.

I don't think that anyone has ever "laid a bike down" intentionally

You need to hang around more Harley riders. It's almost a badge of honour during their BS sessions..."Oh yeah, this hot blonde on her cellphone turned left infront of me...good thing I laid it down otherwise my helmet would have been jammed underneath her Benz SUV, if we had louder pipes she woulda seen me and I wouldn't have insurance paying out $3k for new chrome..."

Lol I guessed that too, just from reading the thread title.

OP, if that happens, make sure there is at least SOME contact between your bike and his cage so it stops being a single vehicle accident. Of course, claim that you did all you could to avoid it.

Is this the case even if the car driver was, for example, failing to yield from a stop sign? It's not what you'd expect.
If someones bike stops faster laying on its side than with tires / brakes on the road, then they are negligent in the maintenance of the bike.

"Buddy, you really need to get those brake pads replaced, they're thinner than my finger nails. Also, those tires. Bro. Those tires."

"Not worth it."

"Come again?"

"I'll just lay 'er down. It'll be cheaper, take less time, and stop faster at this rate. Plus, sweet insurance claim."

Causing an accident to avoid an accident is ridiculous. Of course you are at fault.

I agree that laying a bike down doesn't make sense (Other than the slide under the truck bit). I'd rather use the brakes so I would hit the obstacle at the lowest possible speed.

The problem is the knee jerk reaction when someone suddenly cuts into your territory. The initial reaction is to avoid a collision so we often swerve into a situation where we have a different crash but the person intiating the action gets away untouched.

I think if I was going to take a tumble off of the Gardiner, I would consider falling off first, but better men than I may be able to ride it out.

If you don't hit someone else it's always your fault. If you crash/drop and you didn't hit someone else, get the hell out of there before the cops show up and don't call insurance. If you do you're likely to get charged and any claims will raise your rates.

Best post I've read so far on GTAM.
Thank you! :lmao:

For newer riders can I suggest good reading/viewing over the winter months by downloading an app from the MSF(Motorcycle Safety Foundation) and although U.S. based the skills still apply here. It's Motorcycle Safety Foundation Debuts Riding Tips Mobile App18092013 available on ITunes for iPhones, iPads, it does cost $1,99 but how do you value safe riding?
