EX500, randomly while warming up noticed pipes were red hot, killed it n heard BANG

Gas is leaking through the petcock, through one or both float valves (in the carbs)
Gas is filling the float bowls which then drips into the cylinder, seep past the rings, and end up in the crankcase.

- inspect/rebuild petcock
- inspect/clean/rebuild carbs
Really??? This is so frustrating - in the last 5K I've paid to have the petcock "fixed" TWICE and the carbs overhauled for $450!

hmm... when was the oil last changed? before the petcock/carb maintenance or after?

After - and I overfilled it significantly, though I believe I drained it before riding, but it did sit with it for a bit. Does that mean anything to you?

Lol
I back that I feel emasculated whenever I go to the mechanic
I borrowed that term from the receipt - it was Quality Automotive Services near Caledonia on lawrence do you know them?

You'll be fine, get a manual, read up/ask questions at ex-500.com. Get a few tools.
I believe in you. Now you have to believe in you!

No, haven't heard of them... Thankfully :)

One more thing SLaP - do you think I can leave the crankcase &/or related gasket alone? Like is it part of the problem? And if I understood correctly, the carbs are a symptom of the petcock problem, not messed up themselves, and because of that they got fuel n gunk in em probably?
The petcock's probably the easiest, tho I'm probably gona have to empty the fuel first I assume which is annoying, but not quite as annoying as I know taking out n putting back the carbs, and I've never touched the crankcase before.. Just trying to see what I DONT need to do

I just emptied the gas, pulled on the vacuum tube w my mouth, gas only came out when it was supposed to
does that mean anything for the petcock?

Sounds like you're petcock is okay. But just to be sure check that the vacuum is working on both the reserve and on mode.

+1 on joining ex.500.com (as suggested by Slap). There are several of us from here that are members on there. Smaller but good community and very knowledgable about the EX.

Did you check you're spark plug wires? I had a serious stalling problem that was caused by a misfire in one cylinder causing it to always flood. Something to think about and check while you are in the area.

Cheers, no I didn't but there is something weird - just took out/apart the carbs, one of the carbs was soaked w gas the other was dry..??

In that case you may have a sticky float valve or a clogged jet.

The clean your jets poke them with a .012 guitar string (ex500.com tip) and flush with carb cleaner. By doing this you know for sure your jets clean.

"In that case" - are you referring to because of the one side wet thing only or do you mean that could explain even the leakage and gas in the oil?

started her up with choke, was about to get on about 5 min later
My friend with an old school R1 did this. Started her up, full choke, came out 5 mins later and his header pipes were glowing red and his carbon fiber muffler had imploded! lol.

I guess full choke for long periods of time = really hot exhaust temps ;)

I'm referring to the fact that you have more fuel in one carb than the other.

Good point!

OP - How long do you have your choke open during warm up?

OK i'm a little confused I'm not sure if I'm in a couple threads or in one on ex500.com but basically I'm cleaning em, was waiting for a replacement diaphragm cause there's a rip in one of em, and it just came in
I'll check float height and stuff, but would the rip in a diaphragm explain the leakage and fuel in the oil? Basically will the replacement do the trick or will I need to keep going thru other parts to find the problem? I'd rather find out before doing this and putting everything back on
thanks again i gotta keep saying it cause you guys keep helping
