Yeah this definitely will be a better choice from outright touring and comfort point of view vs. the single R. I absolutely don't mind the 'slight' downgrade in outright performance as i don't think i can ever utilize all of what these S1000 I-4 engines have to offer anyway.

I actually got myself in a funny catch 22 situation after getting the S1000R... I really wanted to get the S1K and the only way to get wife quickly on board with the idea was me telling her that the pillion seat is comfortable enough (big mistake)...first couple of rides and damn I got busted! She's fallen in love with going for rides on the bike now, but just hates the seat. So i gotto start looking for a more comfortable touring bike as my next purchase. Not really a bad problem to have i say. ;)

So thought i would provide a bit of an update. Perhaps @Brian P this can be moved to Reviews? Thanks.

Over 7000km on the clocks now and this thing still puts a smile on my face every time i hit the ignition.

I recently swapped bikes with a friend for his 2018 S1000RR done up pretty nice, so here's my quick comparison having just got my ride back.

The XR with the stock sport screen has worse upper body and head wind protection (shoulder and head buffeting). I do want to upgrade to a touring screen, however BMW wants $450 for theirs and it doesn't seem much taller or wider then what i have now so i'm kind of holding out for the 3rd party options.

Fuel range - XR trumps it in spades (as expected), I've seen 320+km a tank.

Handling - The XR is no slouch. It turns in quite easily, the wide bars give you really nice leverage. I enjoy riding it fast in twisties more then the RR. You can flick it side to side with a thought, which still surprises me considering this weighs over 80lbs more then an RR (and i skipped the forged wheels option).

Riding position - The XR seat is easily love it or hate it. Coming right off the RR it took me a block to get used to it again, but the XR quickly reminded me how pleasant it is to spend time on it.

The Juice - The XR gets on the jam fairly early and then just pulls non stop. I would say above 11k rpm the power from the RR get's scary, truly a weapon.

Overall I enjoyed my week with the RR, it certainly makes me feel pretty cool riding it, probably more cool then the XR. But in almost every other way i'm glad i don't own a race replica for street.

I miss center stands...so much easier to do any kind of maintenance/wrenching

could removing the screen and going without it be better?
 
Would love to hear more updates on this...reliability etc. Might be in the market for something new next year!

Haven’t ridden an XR but heard there is still some vibration, seat isn’t the greatest, and I really really wish it still had Brembos! Need a test ride!

It's apparently the parent company of brembo? zero issues with hauling this thing down.

everyone whose sat/ridden it so far has been down with the seat. but you won't be able to hang off it very well and ive seen plenty of rebukes online.
 
I think they’re manufactured by Hayes. Not sure they’re associated with Brembo, but that’s great to hear! I did read about a recall for leaking calipers that had me concerned (not that Brembos haven’t had recalls lol)

Interesting. I heard a rumour that the switch was due to Brembo refusing to brand as BMW. Even if they’re owned by a Brembo subsidiary they don’t promote it, which is odd.

They’re also a 2 piece design from what I hear? I need to ride one next spring and give them a go.

Oh I stand corrected then. I heard it from someone, maybe they made the same mistake.

I dunno, I pull the brake, she drops anchor. I'm happy.
 
Further to the Hayes recall, they are now stopping sales of all BMW motorcycles with Hayes calipers. Seems the "fix" doesn't completely solve the leaking issue.

BMW Motorrad has announced a non-compliance recall and stop sale for the K50, K51, K52, K67 andK69. The recall is related to the front brake calipers in vehicles produced from 8/27/2018 up to2/28/2020
