Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Close. <2' drop, whatever you want. More than 5'10" drop, 42" railing. Between those two, 36" railing.

The stupid bench railing combo turns almost every situation into a >2' drop that requires a railing 36" above the bench, not the 18" that is typically there.
Not having a minimum scares me a bit. Zero is better IMO than a short one.

Let's assume a drop of under 2 feet and someone starts going over the edge. With NO railing they can hopefully get their feet into a position where they can come down in some type of stumble. Put in a a railing below knee height and they can't get their feet out to where it would do any good. Basically a trip wire and they come down hard on their torso or arms.

#1 killer in Ontario is falls from heights….and very low heights.

I just did the training and can’t remember exact figure but something ~300 people/year die from falling at heights (and majority less than 5ft off the ground).

Knee is just about healed. Apparently, I twisted it up in the attic removing the shed.

Who in their right mind stores an outdoor shed in an attic?

The plan is to blow insulation into the ceiling. Besides the shed, it looks almost like he was trying to set up a dance floor up there with all the wood on top of the ceiling joists. I think he may have nailed it down too.

You getting the insulation blown in by a company or doing it yourself/renting the equipment?

Someone in our neighbourhood was pepper sprayed and robbed last week. A few other things happening in the neighbourhood too. It’s not Jane and Finch level at all but I just ordered a camera system for the house and I’ll fit it next week. Seems like the town junkies are expanding their traditional operating base. Maybe the price of drugs has gone up due to border closures?

I blew it myself in the old house. Buy 10 bags and the rental was free. House floor plate was only <500 Sq ft. It was cheaper to add more depth than buy what I needed and rent the machine. I carried the machine up to the room with the attic hatch. It made yelling down to load another bale easier but next time I would probably leave the machine somewhere easier.

We did it ourselves. Found 4 family / friends all wanted it and grabbed a van, 30 bags, and used the machine outside manned by one guy, one guy in the attic, and one guy in the middle.

Did 4 of our houses within a day.

Did the same a few years ago. Buy enough bags to get the machine free: cottage, my house, and cousins house within 1 day.

An elderly casual friend died from a fall about a month ago. He climbed up a ladder to water some plants and lost his balance. Boom.

Mind me asking what the going rate is for that? Trying to decide if the frustration may be worth it.
Less important than the rate is the quality. A friend paid and to make their job easier, they installed a cardboard dam 2' inside the walls to keep the insulation out of the eaves. I shot his house with an IR cam and asked wtf. Leaving 2' around the perimeter with the old R value eliminates almost all potential cost savings.

Unfortunately, the contract wasn't broken down into that detail.

Wow…took all of 10 mins to set up the entire security cam system. Wasn’t expecting things to be that simple…I’m sure I’ll find a problem at some point. Cameras just need mounting but aside from that it’s all linked. These things are impressive…AI face detection, AI human detection (so my dogs don’t set it off), I can shout at the Jehovas Witnesses and shine spotlights at them without leaving my sofa (that one is worth it’s weight in gold), also when I feel grumpy at Halloween I can switch the doorbell off remotely so the dogs don’t get upset. I got a version with no subscription too and the system works even if WiFi is jammed or down.

Who made it? Is it hardwired? If not, I call BS on the jamming. That would be optimistic marketing at best (eg it may operate on a different frequency so jamming wifi doesn't affect it but if I am running jammers, I would take out a huge range of frequencies). I would be shocked if it isn't on wifi frequencies and their claim is related cameras continuing to talk to home base even if local wifi signal drops (but if there is a jammer blasting, that doesn't work).

Punched a few 1 1/4" holes through a brick wall using a borrowed Makita SDS Max drill. Took less than a minute a hole. Awesome. Installing a Woodford 22 Hot and Cold hose bib soon. No more running in an out like a sucker in the winter to flood the wifes ice rink without freezing the tap.

EDIT:
Coming up in the near future is JT's latest bonfire "greener homes" and a heat pump to replace the old A/C.

Does anybody have useful experience (good or bad) on whole home surge protectors? I had a Siemens installed on the last house. Current house doesn't have one. Heat pump will likely be variable speed with lots of fragile boards and sensors so I may put one on this house. Alternative would be something like ICM493 to protect the A/C but it's pricey. It does do some things like auto-shutdown on overvoltage though. Hydro one runs us hot (~124/249 right now with A/C running). I could use a buck transformer to take the edge off as I have never seen below 246 but that is more expense and I don't have power monitoring running so I'm not entirely sure the range of voltage here (especially at times like the middle of the night where I have never checked voltage). @SunnY S ?

It's a Eufy 2C cam system. No idea if true or not but that was stated somewhere on the blurb. Basically I just wanted a half decent system without a subscription. The only snag I’ve found so far is that you can’t schedule the things easily so it’s either on or off. There’s probably a setting somewhere but if not no biggy.

Damned white cameras. I have black soffit so I am sticking with black cameras. They are much rarer apparently. I want them to be unobtrusive not look like a prison so I set them above downspouts. Not the best for sightlines but not terrible and fulfills my need for mostly hidden.

Funny you should say that as I was thinking the same thing when I got them. I think someone either did a mod to make them all black or there are black versions. For round here I think the utility is in deterrence rather than after-the -fact use right now so I’m fine with them being somewhat visible. They are small though and so can basically be put almost anywhere and if you want a quick fix just wrap them in black insulation tape.

I've been redoing the sink in the garage over the last few days. I installed it with my dad when I first moved in and was trying to do it cheap. Now I've got a nice countertop made for it, proper plumbing, high quality wall mounted tap set you can hang a bucket off of, sink mounted correctly, etc.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I've been chasing leaks for 2 days now. I'm putting lots of teflon tape and probably 100 ftlbs onto tightening these fittings and still getting drips out of some of them. Finally thought I got it today and now the body of the tap is leaking... ffs

Pics?

Edit: Disregard. Late to the party.

Although finished pics would still be nice
