I'm ending my search for a used GSX-R after receiving the following 2023 updated Blacklist from an Insurer:
-GSX-R
-CBR/F4i/RR
-YZF R6 and R1
-ZXR
-T675
Also a statement that most insurers cannot even provide coverage but for the few that might, the costs are extreme, 5+ yrs of continuous prior insurance with clean record needed and full M license .
It helps explain why my Buddy lost his coverage for renewal of his R1. Strange thing is he had been licensed for 60+ yrs.
A Follow Up:
Some great feedback but just to clarify a few things and not endorsing what the insurers are doing.
The Blacklist is very short and comprises track ready and competition style bikes that are also designed to be street legal. We all know that they were built for one purpose and it was not to go slow. As I had noted some companies will insure them and maybe the lucky ones won't be quoted exorbitant costs.
I was told the list is current as some folks think it may be outdated.
The origin of the info came from a NFP representative who we know represent quite a few insurers.
I came upon this info while dealing with a few sellers of the GSX-R 1000. Two of them were honest when they stated they recently acquired them but are selling because of either no available insurance coverage or it was too much to insure. I did the diligent thing and tried getting a quote before buying.
I have a number of bikes but wanted a sportier version at a good used price. Having ridden my Bud's R1, I knew that I would only use it for short trips and a few good blasts within the escarpment area where I reside but now realize that it won't be cost effective for those purposes.
Oh ya, my other buddy with his R1 is over 70 yrs old, got his licence when he was eligible back in the day, clean driving record but most importantly for him is as fit as his grandkids are and smart. He was very distraught having the Insurer cancel him out but realized it was probably a good thing so he is buying a Vstrom now.
