Eleven year old girl dies tobogganing.

Bridge on lakeshore rd at Bronte has sign on bridge at road level , no jumping from the bridge
Sign on the concrete support at river level , attention paddle boarders and canoers, watch for jumpers coming from above .
Really

Both signs are probably due to required police/ambulance response to the bridge.

While I can only speak about the top level of the Wasaga Beach bridge near the main strip...I'm sure there are similar signs below for boaters to watch for jumpers.

Its a terrible accident , sadly it happens every winter.

for those with kids , teach them how to roll off a tobbogan , the scratching up from the snow is a lot less problem than hitting the fence or post or tree.
Bail out is lesson two , lesson one is on a three of four kid tobbogan , dont be guy 1
IIRC She was in the middle, the tobbogan hit ice and went sideways. Sad.

More than a decade ago Ontario Hydro made a temporary change in the water intake at Niagara Falls. IIRC they usually sucked water in Chippawa Creek but one weekend they didn't. They posted it everywhere they could because it would affect moored boats etc.

Some scuba divers apparently were in the habit of going into the river above the creek and getting sucked in. For some reason they missed the signs and a few went past the creek and got sucked into the turbines or trash grates. A few sensed the timing was off, surfaced and got out.

In some places there are so many signs it's easy to miss the one that could save your life.

And yes, it's invariably someone new to Canada. I think there's just a risk-taking attitude with newcomers that belies sound reasoning. I see it all the time driving. I'm sure the parent of the girl feels awful. RIP.
In most countries in the world, 'this' stuff happens all the time but outside of immediate family, nobody cares cause its so frequent. We're just one of several countries that try to prevent it.

I really hope there is no settlement and the lawsuit is thrown out. Personal tragedies should not be subsidized by public money.

Even better, they shouldn't be about money. The number of people that get huge settlements "so it won't happen again" is mind-boggling. If it was about safety and not money, convert the entire settlement (minus lawyer fees) to a trust that attacks the perceived problem. Very very few people do this so it really is about the money.

They closed this gate on the canal north of McLeod Rd. for maintenance. When they do that, the river reverts to it's natural course to the river instead of the intake/entrance of the canal.

If they didn't have the break wall jutting out into the Niagara River diverting water into the head of the Welland River, there wouldn't be enough pressure to keep the portion of the river upstream of the intake from draining itself. You can see the difference in the natural characteristic of the river using it as a source for the canal made in this pic.

First and foremost this is very tragic and I feel for the family.

IME most good tobogganing hills have signs that say no tobogganing including the ones my kids use and the ones I used as a kid. Just go down where there are no obstructions, posts or trees.

One parenting problem not mentioned here.... I always made my kids climb back up the hill off the run to the side. Also to not drama queen laying at the bottom if they are not hurt. That frees up the hill for everyone else. I would say 80% of the kids do not get it and they lay around at the bottom and/or then climb right back up the middle of the run, both are dangerous, ruins the fun for others, and pushes other people to go down in suspect areas....

Thanks, I knew a few basics but now it makes more sense. Sad for the divers and their families.
