earbuds?

There are people that listen with both earbuds in blasting their music though which could be seen as a problem in terms of hearing emergency vehicles around especially if they're going through a red and you don't notice.

I find that for some inexplicable reason they don't even use the siren until they're almost at the light they're gonna blow through

I use these. Protects me from going deaf but i can still hear everything around me, including that sweet honda growl at 8,000rpm + :D

BTW everyone is gonna flame me to hell for this, but you have no business listening to music when riding a motorcycle out on the streets

I won't flame you, I agree. But it would have been hypocritical of me after admitting that I do it occasionally (couldn't find a "sheepish" smiley). I realized that it makes me nervous in heavy traffic, and that's where I spend 90% of my time. For longer rides at speed, I use those foam earplugs too.

I use earbuds at times when Im commuting to and from work, or riding alone on more highway/ less exciting type riding. I use an App on my phone that adjusts the volume to my speed with GPS, it works pretty well. However I think I need better earbuds since it can be tricky at times when sliding my helmet on one may get tugged from my ear.

Right now I use a cheap eBay helmet speaker with a Bluetooth receiver that connects to my phone:

And I'm waiting for one of these to arrive so I can connect it to my iPod:

I use Ultimate Ears and properly designed earphones save your hearing, attenuate the outside sounds ( they don't eliminate the outside sounds ) and allow quality music.

If you are really anal about it there is an iPhone App to sense outside sounds through your mic and both kill the music and increase the microphone gain so you can hear MORE than you can with your ears inside the helmet.

It was kind of startling at times when it cut the music for a bit and I could hear the Burgman engine - which is buried and very quiet.

Etymotic who arguably are the gold standard in earphones now include it

You control how much outside sound is heard and when. No need to remove or re-adjust your earphones.

It cuts the music and ups the microphone gain if any sound jumps out of the background noise ( wind noise generally ).
The parameters are settable. It does require earphones with a microphone - I always buy that kind as they have an on/off skip button as well.

I see Ultimate Ears can do to $1,000 now !!!

I wear a very thin Oxford Balaclava ( it's really thin ) and it makes getting helmet on and off fair easier, keeps the earbuds planted properly and keeps the helmet a lot cleaner too as it's easy to wash.
I rarely wear it over my mouth ( sometimes handy in cold weather ) - it just stretches under the chin and it's really not noticeable unless your helmet is a very tight fit.

Still using my Etymotic Er-6i's. They are almost done and I'm in the market for a new pair soon. I use mine almost daily even for 8hrs a day at work.

Recently I tried using using earplugs and my Scala G9 with mp3 player plugged directly in via the cord instead of bluetooth. I found it too quiet for me on the highway even with the volume maxed out. Even off the highways, there was pretty much zero bass response, but it was definitely better than no music. Looking forward to trying out the Sena SMH10 to see if it sounds better or works better with my own earbuds.

I use the Ultimate Ears and can still easily hear the Scala speakers for phone calls and chat with riding buddy.

Have to crank the Scala up full to do so. Getting ear buds with somewhat lower attentuation ( noise isolation ) lets me use both. 26-28 db attentuation seems fine.

If I use earplugs with 33 db it's hard to hear the scala tho I do love the quiet.

From your description of too quiet and no base almost sounds as if one channel is out - I've been plagued with that with the Scala's
Likely my last Scala - will do Sena next.

CHeck out the Ultimate Ears line from Logitech. Good selection and some amazing deals on Amazon.
Got some for $59 i7 - normally $129 retail and $80 or so online. If you get off colours there are often amazing deals.

I might try the Etymotic next tho. I do like that many are moving to modular where you can replace cables etc.

I use Sure SE215's. They lock into your ear and the cable goes over your ear, so they are perfect for the helmet. They are comfortable and they don't come loose. The only issue is they aren't as easy to just put in your ears and go.

I bought some of these noise isolation tips for them, but I don't use them. They cut out too much surrounding sound. The stock foam ends cut out a lot of noise already and are fine for me.

Mark,

Have you ever tried wearing the left earbud in the right ear and vice versa? I had read that this eliminates the need to loop them around your ear (unless you thin it's better to loop them around the ear). I am thinking about buying these as my next set. What kind of helmet are you using these with? I'm with a Shoei RF1100.

And a question for those using the Sena SMH10 - Do you wear earbuds that have their own separate controls on them to control functions like volume, next song, etc, or do you do all your controlling through the Sena unit.
Cheers.

I have a Scorpion exo-750. I think I've reversed them by accident once, but I still looped them around. It would probably work. The problem with normal earbuds not over the ear is invariably I pull on the cable a bit and pull them loose.

All controls are through the unit -- very intuitive!

Because you cant hear things around you...you know cars, emergency vehicles, your engine, etc...
I will share the heat with you because I am in full 100% agreement. Sure as someone stated you have volume control but I think it is safe to say that most would crank it up rather than tune it down . Interestingly enough in some states it is illegal while in others you are only aloud one ear piece or helmet speaker.

I listen to music and my GPS lady while riding. I have the volume preset to ensure I can hear the GPS and the world around me. The music is at a low volume setting. I am not 12 so I set it and forget it..
