DUI Charge and Bike Insurance?

So, waiting for my DD in a parking lot, decided to go through timmies drive thru (bone headed move, but the past is the past) and sure enough cop pulls behind me in the drive thru. Just my luck, got ticketed for over 80/Impaired driving, cop was watching me because of an invalid sticker on a car that wasn't mine. Went to a specialist and in the end was told I probably would lose, and may as well plead guilty and end up getting my full license back in a year (3 months no license, 9 months Interlock system)

Wrote my M1 earlier this summer with intentions of getting M2 this month, but now that whole plan is gone and I will have to rewrite again next year and try again from there.

My question is though, with having a fresh DUI charge, and only having an M2 what is my motorcycle insurance going to be like? Am I even going to be able to find any? If it helps at all I am 24 years old and plan on getting myself the ninja 300 to start out on for a while.

Real bummed out about all this, all I was looking forward to this year was riding. Learned a few things along the way about the legalities of all this, and also will never even cross my mind to attempt to sit in the drivers seat of a car after a couple drinks (even though I never encouraged or drove drunk besides through this drive through)

feels bad man

Thanks for any input or help!

I feel for you but you may be in the 3-5000 dollar range, thats if you can find someone who will insure you.

when you plead guilty to your DUI you will have an "I" condition on your license. You can not receive a motorcycle license at this point, as the bike license isn't possible with your Interlock condition (there is no way to put an interlock on a bike) You can't upgrade to an M2 either if you already had your M1. The MTO won't do it at their testing center, and neither will any local college for their M1x course.

Correct, I lost my M1 with this charge and am not able to do it with interlock, I am asking for future reference as in August 2014 will be when I can write my M1 and go from there.

Dirtbikes are fun and just as expensive of a hobby as street bikes. No license needed since you aren't on public roads.

To directly answer your question - Very High - I can't give you a number but any broker should be able to. (think $5K a year)

Being 24, your insurance will be quite high anyway. The DUI charge will push it into the stratosphere. Be prepared for a lot of insurance companies not wanting your business and turning you away.

Sorry for the bad news. If you really want to ride, consider dirt biking on trails or track riding where insurance is not needed.

You cant obtain a motorcycle license until august 2014??? So really this means you cannot obtain a motorcycle license until Spring 2015, because August is the end of the summer and almost no where will accept just an M1 to insure a bike especially with your record and by the time you get your M2 it will be November(if you manage to even get the M2 done in August). Realisticly the soonest possible time for you to ride will be in Summer of 2015, and thats if you can find an insurance company willing to insure you. Honestly best bet is to just pick up dirt biking as mentioned before or just start saving up alot from now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but once you've waited the 90 days between M1 and M2 once, you don't have to wait it again should your M1 expire (forcing you to get a M1 again).

That's true, if you've held a valid M1 and already waited the 60 day minimum, there is no longer a waiting period if you have to get another M1.

ahh, did not know that :S, thought once the 90 days is up you gotta take it over again and wait the 60 days again

That's actually very awesome to know, thank you very much. Itll maybe let me ride for a month or two if I can manage to find someone to insure me. Hearing the prices between 5k-10k isn't so disheartening as its something I very much want to do.

Quick question, for track days, SOAR, and the like would you need to have insurance? Or just a race qualification/license?

And i may look into dirt biking as well, learning more ways to ride a bike on or off road cant be a bad thing.

You can get an e-bike and ride without a license or insurance on the road.

[h=4]14. If my driver’s licence has been suspended, can I legally operate an e-bike?[/h] It depends on the particular circumstances that lead to the licence suspension. If you have a driving prohibition order related to a conviction under the Criminal Code of Canada, you cannot legally operate an e-bike. If your driver's licence has been suspended under other circumstances, it is recommended that you discuss your situation with a licensed legal practitioner before deciding to operate an e-bike.

Track days/racing requires a race license which isn't controlled by the gov't. You should look into RACE/SOAR's requirements for riders though.

Dirt biking is your best bet imo. Plenty of fun and the skills will translate.

does DUI come off your record in 3 years as well, and cops can give you a ticket in parking lot even if they never saw you on public roads or do anything illegal??

Hey wait a sec, you got pulled over and busted in a Tim Hortons drive-through? That's not a public road, it's private property. Do the cops have jurisdiction there? Did you even fight the charge? It's not like you were weaving on a residential street.

The typical interpretation of roadway includes areas that are easily accessed from the road. A parking lot with all entrances chained off would not be considered a roadway, a tim hortons parking lot could.

Criminal code violations (ie DUI) have few restrictions on where they can be laid (search for JohnnyP636 posts on dangerous driving charges).

Just so the OP knows, DUI can be laid for care and control, this is sometimes interpreted as being in the parking lot near the car with the keys while waiting for your DD. I think that is a ridiculous extension of the law, but it has been laid numerous times in similar situations (sleeping it off in the passenger seat, standing near the car etc.). The ability to drive drunk gets you the charge, not necessarily actually driving.

+1 on the dirt bike. You'll be paying more for insurance per year then buying a dirt bike, and all the cash you'd use up riding it that year, probably could fit in some upgrades in there as well :lmao:

Unfortunately yes, since i was technically operating a motor vehicle they do still have jurisdiction on that. Believe me I looked into everything, and talked with a very reputable specialist and he told me the same.

I dont believe so, i think it takes a little longer but I havent completely looked into that one yet.
