I guess you're right
if you're gonna spend a ton of dough to make an engine Euro-whatever tier compliant
may as well start with a clean slate and make it more future-proof

this is what killed my Capo
the 1200 V twin was miles away from passing Tier 4
rather than dropping the $$ to make it pass
they focused on the 900 engine and let the Capo model die
 
My understanding is that the V4 engine is lighter and more compact (except width, but it's only 20mm wider) than the V2 was. And I betcha eliminating the desmo makes it cost less to build. And more favorable bore and stroke relationships are better for emissions.
 
Should add that Ducati went beyond the people whose idea is that a proper Ducati has an air cooled 2 valve per cylinder 90 degree carbureted V2 a long time ago.
 

I can't remember a review where Simon Hargreaves has been quite so effusive. It's definitely not for me, but it sounds like a heck of a bike.
