Ducati Maintenance, is it really that bad?

While I try to do stuff myself or with the help of others, there's certain things I won't touch like the 10k service just so I wouldn't have issues with warranty if somewhere down the road I need it. I'm saving up for the big one, gonna need to buy a jar of vaseline for this one.

just curious ....how much is the difference in the maintenance costs between ducati and bmw...say...1199 vs s1000r?

whether or not its expensive depends on what you consider expensive. I do 90% of my own work and send out stuff that I dont want to do or dont have electronic diagnostics to fix. I have a Ducati and a BMW here now. Parts cost but so do all brands. VW parts seem expensive as well but its what i enjoy driving and riding.
All of what are considered premium brands will cost a bit more, its the price of exclusivity. Its not crippling but you cant expect RangeRover and GM service to be the same price.

as an aside Ducati had a huge increase in sales in 2011 and good numbers in 2012 and have about 3% global market share.......

Ducatis are lovely bikes, even the lower end models. To use one as a single vehicle mile muncher somehow seems wrong. Everything I've read about Ducs is that the maintainence issues have been largely addressed so that shouldn't scare one away too much. Riding around on knackered looking moto candy would be the bummer tho. Personally I would go NC700.

I can't comment on Ducati. My 30,000 km maintenance on my S1000RR was about $600.00, which I found reasonable. I'm not finding costs any more than I was paying for Honda servicing, but I haven't done a detailed analysis. Interesting thing about parts for BMW, I paid about $3.00 for a bolt for the foot peg and paid about $18.00 for almost the exact bolt for my wife's Kawasaki (although that bolt was hollow).

i got an email from a local bmw dealers about the maintenance costs on S1000r.
The first service at 1000km is about $250.00. After that they are
every 10,000km. Those services are $300 to $400 depending on age (brake
fluid every 2 years). The valves are checked at 30,000, slightly more for
that service. Tires according to your riding habits but most people will
wear the originals out before 10,000. Hope that helps.
