Ducati 1098 or keep the 09 R6

So, first off, I've had 2 R6 bikes, and now own a 600RR. I will say the following about the 1098...
Unlimited amounts of torque and unbelievable bike... however...
Very heavy clutch
awful (on the wrists) seating position
super thin / hard seat (OEM)
Lots of heat from from the engine
higher on insurance (likely)
expensive (relatively) on maintenance
The other thing I will mention is that it attracts a lot of attention (usually little boys)
uses more gas (not that this particular item would deter me), and smaller tank - only gets ~150km/tank

Hope that helps. Ride it if you have the opportunity, this will help.

It's just the general consensus I've heard from many other people.
Come on out to Mosport May 26/27 for the DOCC Ducati festival.Ducati will never shed it's reputation gained in the early years for problems that most other bikes were also victim to.That is until the Japanese invaded with their mass produced more reliable machines.
Drop by the track and get to meet some owners for yourself. You are very welcome to hang out in my pit and develop your own "consensus".

wow so disappointing with the Ducati test ride today. Went to GP bikes took it down their road twice and returned it...didn't even bother to take it on the highway anymore...

Its so different. Heavy, u gotta push it to make it go, breaks felt weird too, the bike is so slim , the riding position so different and my hands hurt me in less than 5 minutes. Thanks God I did not buy it I would've hate it. i dont like the engine noise..2 cylinder to shaky, my R6 is so agile, so smooth, u feel the power right the way.. the 1098 has power but its different... not for me anyway..

I am so happy cuz I tested first and now I would love my R6 even more.. maybe get full exhaust system with a power commander for more power if I need it..but I would not trade it ..no thanks..

Weird, I also come from an R6 ( 2008 ) haven't tried the 1x98 but did take the 848 for a test ride. And was amazed by it, completely different machine then the r6 and much better in every sense. Much better breaks, low/mid-range is awesome, so is the torque. Also much better handling bike then the R6. Granted the clutch is heavier, but that's a non issue. You need more then "a few minutes" to adjust to the L-twin, and then you will appreciate it. I fell in love with the 848 and without a doubt think that the 1098 would be even better machine...

I don't find weird at all, i have had the same experience with my friend Ducati1098s...i never said anything to anybody but in my mind i knew it (these bikes Ducatis) they're not for me!!!!.
I'm glad for you that you had the chance to try it out the machine otherwise it could it been a totally WRONG MOVE!!!!!
Stick with your R6- you have a weapon and you don't even know. Case close!

The latest Gen R6 is one of the sharpest handling bikes on the planet. Ducati, not so much.

 there isn't a laughing smiley big enough

R6 is the most gutless supersport on the planet, there is NO power until 10k+ RPM. Are you sure you rode a 1098 and not a CBR125?

I understand the complaint about needing more effort to turn-in, this is how the geometry of the 1098 is... what it loses in nimbleness, it makes up for in superb turning stability. It's just a different setup, thats all. But your thoughts about the power and the brakes? Surely you took 2 big hits off a dirty crack rock before your ride!!!

I dont know why you guys say no power under 10k.. There lots of power there as well.. unless u are a big fat pig... After 10k it`s flying fast ..thats different... and what keeps u under 10k... R6 has 16, 18 rpms.. ducati has what 12..14 ?

Anyways obviously the tank is faster ... has more torque and cc but for me again R6 is a fast beast... not to mention u can do power commander full exhaust and she'll run like there's no tomorrow.

The looks I agree with many Ducati doesn't look as aggressive as a nice R6 but again it depends..

Anyway ..I just cant believe i did not like it... and I would for sure stick with R6 which is lighter. the 2 cylinder noise I hate it.. just like a choper .. harley... I want my bike to be smooth but fast

It has no power because compared to a 1098, it has no power. At 10k your R6 is barely making 40 ft-lbs of torque. The Ducati makes that much at 3000rpm.

Im not ragging on you for not liking it. Coming from an R6, a 1098 is a HUGE adjustment both in power, delivery, and the 'sluggish' geometry. But the power and the brakes are undeniable; its a nuclear weapon compared to an R6. If you gave it a proper test instead of giving up after 4 minutes you might've come away with a different opinion.

I'm with you on this one I don't like twins, the engine vibration bothers me, I find the i4s to be much smoother.

I have a full system and a power commander on my 09 r6 and its a pretty decent upgrade, if you manage to get a good tune you can really smooth out the power band and gain a little bit of low and mid range power. However if I were to do it again I wouldn't spend the $1000+ on the full system and just stick with the -1/+2 sprocket swap, this in its self will give you a way more noticeable gain in low range power then any other mod and it wont cost you more than $300.

I was considering trading the R6 in this summer for a gsxr1000, mainly for the comfort factor as that bike is much more comfortable on longer rides and I would be lying if I wasn't tempted by the 1000cc power. I find the r6 unbearable on longer rides, I took it from Toronto to Ottawa last summer and I won't be doing that again.. however I got a 3d speeding ticket this winter so I have a feeling if I try and swap insurance to a new bike statefarm wont write me :(

I would go check out some of the jap litre bikes, you'll find them much more comfortable, wider, smoother engine and still ample amounts of low end torque compared to the 600cc.

600cc bikes having "no power" before 10krpm is such an overstatement lol... my r6 with the mods I have will put the front wheel in the air in first and second gear from just throttle well before 10krpm, it's no litre bike but some people in this thread make it sound like a 250, lets not get carried away.

I totally agree with u optionfa. The bike for long rides kill u haha thats why i dont do to often toronto niagara or if I do .. I will sleep there to relax haha :)).. I am buying a comfort seat or cobin hopefully this will help with some of the pain.

Probably you are right wont even do the full exhaust.. I dont want cops to chase me for the noise.. then spend more money for nothing..

To be honest the bike has power... I`m flying with 200Km+ .. what more do u want on a 2 wheel... I`m scared now just saw some pics with some accidents and I dont need anymore power lol :))

and I agree with mmmnaked as well....but all I can say is .. ducati 1098 is not for everyone.. its a love /hate thing....

Hope this topic will help others decide as well.

Be safe everyone !

Ducati's are like a fine wine, good scotch or a nice cigar. Knowledge and experience help appreciate them they way they are intended to be enjoyed. And indeed, they are not for everyone. (I don't appreciate cigars as I don't smoke)

Not knocking any R6 owners or riders or suggesting they are riding anything less worthy. I don't care what you ride as long as you ride.

You should look at thrust curves. Since the 600s have much higher redlines they are geared 30% steeper which multiplies the torque a corresponding amount.......that's why they keep up.
