Driving: Is Aggressive the new Defensive?

I'd have to say the GTA is the only **** hole I've been that is like that. I always like to ride / drive with a good double car length in front of me. What the OP is saying is true, soon as you get into the GTA it's everyone for themselves, squeezing into lanes half the size of there car and just assuming you are going to slam on your breaks so they can get in. I can say I've ridden to Nova Scotia and have never seen that aggressive style. I consider myself a good driver, but soon as you get into the GTA it feels like it has it's own laws of the road, and you better adapt quickly or someones gonna get smashed.
Actually I'd say every single big city are like that. GTA, Montréal, Québec city, Madrid, Roma, Paris. In every big city I went in my life, I always saw the same type of driving. I saw an exception when I went in Boston and Salem city (small city) I saw Roma and I seriously think here people drive carefully!

5 second gap.
Try it... enjoy it... feel the serenity.
5 seconds is the new 2 seconds in the GTA.

If I tried to leave a 5 second gap between myself and the next car, on my commute home, there would be 15 cars in it before I could blink.

Not as many people cut into my lane as I would have thought (both highway and inner city).

When they do cut me off, they tend to do it further away and I don't feel as slighted; though I did have to make a slight change in my perspective.

I find aggressive drivers are more confident (confident != safer). Those that are passive (too passive) are no less a danger on the road (I'd say equally as dangerous as those overly aggressive). For example when you're on the road, drive! Don't wait 20 minutes after the car in front of you starts moving before you take your foot off the brake, and don't slam on the brakes when the car 1/2 km ahead of you downshifts. The more passive you drive, the more aggressive those around you will drive.

+1 that's actually the cause of my little fender bender last winter.
Lady started to turn right after waiting at a red light that turned green (in a spot where it was legal AND safe to turn right on the red) she then slammed her brakes on when she saw a pedestrian that wasn't even near the curb on the other side of the road. I had my eyes off the road for a split second, looked up and she was stopped after moving only about 10 feet. Had she been a confident driver, she would have just made the turn and nothing would have happened...
Yes, it was my fault but it was something I didn't expect her to do for no reason.

you ride according to conditions, and like our weather, there is a huge change in condition, which it seems not a lot of people like...the city is a very different scene from the highway, from the countryside from the west end to the east end...it's all over the place...i noticed int eh west end, the driving style of people is a little more relaxed, where int he east end it's a like a race to the next traffic light...you just have to be more aware, that's all, sh1t happens...

Passive is the new aggressive, aggressive is the new stupid...ad infinitum.I prefer assertive. You go when you're supposed to, stop when you're suppose to (a complete, not rolling stop), stay on your side of the road, and if some slow passive aggressive person gets in front you back off and chillax until a proper passing opportunity comes up.

It's better than walking, waiting for a tow truck or stopping off at the reporting station.

Better than what happened to rmemedic, by closing that gap.Looks like Ottawa may have hit the critical mass, walking along the sidewalk is getting to be worth your life here.
