Drinking & Driving!

I drove through a RIDE check tonight and saw an older gentleman with his lady friend on the side of the road and their car on a tow truck.

I really can't believe that people are still that stupid, why would anyone risk their life or anyone else's for that matter? And for what? A few lousy drinks? You want to drink, fine, enjoy your evening but don't be a schmuck and risk the lives of those around you.

Dumbass.

More people do it then you'd think on a regular basis.

On a side note once i went through a ride check on my bike, the cops looks at me, looks at the bike and then says "If you're stupid enough to be drinking and driving on this thing then good luck to you" and waved me through :lmao:

Last ride check a good looking alpha male metro sexual cross breed got right up in my face. It was very awkward but I understand it's a tactical move. I wouldn't want to be him doing that all day.
A very small amount of alcohol shouldn't be a problem but if you're involved in an accident not your fault it could still get sticky. Absolutely not worth the risk all things considered. That people, especially older, are still doing it is weird. Risk benefit ratio is way out of whack on that deal.

Everyone knows it's wrong. There's more than enough education on the topic. There is more than enough media coverage of accidents/deaths caused by it. But people will still do it because people are idiots. That's why we still unfortunately have RIDE checks.

Because that's the nature of alcohol: "I'm *fine*, I won't get caught/in an accident".

Bernie has it right. Drinking and driving isn't illegal. Driving while over the .08 legal limit is. It's entirely possible the guy the OP saw was hit with the new .05 almost pregnant rule (you haven't broken the law, but we're going to take your license, impound your car, and rape your wallet anyway because you're close).

Similar yesterday. 830 at night. "You're not dumb enough to be out drinking and on that thing are you??" I didn't know if I should laugh or be serious. So I just said no sir and away I went at a faster rate of speed than I should have laughing

I agree completely. This isn't a new topic. People are just really dumb.

Make no mistake about it, the law in Ontario has the legal limit at .05, you just escalate to a criminal charge at .08. Ontario can't change the Criminal Code so for over 10 years Ontario instilled a 12 hour suspension for blowing over .05. The problem was that there was no way to track it and you could have people that were getting a 12 hour suspension every month or even more and no one knew that you had a problem driver on the roads. Now it's a 3 day suspension for the 1st offense, 7 day for the 2nd, and 30 day for the 3rd and these suspensions show up in your driving record. Would you prefer a charge instead or on top of the suspension?

Your car is NOT impounded for .05 but if it's at the side of the road in a spot it can't remain in and no one can get it out of there in a reasonable time, then it's towed and you (or someone you authorize) can retrieve it when you want. Your car is only impounded if you are charged with over .08.

Maybe the old guy enjoyed a glass a wine at dinner and that put him over the .05 ********

That'd be a BIG glass; the average person requires over 2 drinks (normal glass of wine, shot, or a beer) in quick succession to go over .05.

they need to focus more on enforcing the texting and driving laws. I saw a lady yesterday doing it. It ****** me off so much, I rolled down my window and threw my beer at her

Fully agree. Some d bag in his bro dozer cut me off twice yesterday within 5 blocks. First was texting the next was a phone call. Way to make a guy almost spill his drink :lmao:

The younger generation is more aware of the whole drinking and driving thing than the older guys. The rate has been brought down due to education. I'll never drive drunk, and I make plans for how I'm getting around. We've had fights with guys trying to leave parties with their keys. Even the drunk guys see it as an issue and will stop someone before they leave.

Older generation, was not like that so much. I know so many guys in their 40s and up that will have "just a few" and drive home.

and yet the highest age group charged nationally is 20-24, and second is 25-34..................

Was at the beach yesterday, bunch of underagers in a Mustang GT drinking including the presumed driver...let YRP know about it, no shame. I do wish they'd do something about Texting and Driving though, I find them and the morons dialing or checking their calendars (I was so close I could see his screen) are worse.

I get the same. That's discrimination!
That's "bikist"

The Milton Police seem to be hauling over a half dozen DWI's a week without much of an effort. A couple weeks ago, I rolled up on the James Snow Parkway cutoff, looked to my left, and saw a driver drinking Vodka straight out of the bottle at the light. I'm willing to bet the percentage of drivers DWI hasn't changed much despite the hightened awareness.

IMO, distracted drivers are more of a menace on the road, though. It would be an easy source of income to just start issuing tickets for that while making the roads a little safer.

They will charge you for littering and chase you down and seize your house.

I drink and drive all the time. As an adult I am an experienced drinker and know when ive had too much to drink and when i haven't, it's called maturity. So just because i have 0.09 or 0.10 in my system it doesnt mean im drunk, it just means im over what the law says i am. If I were ever in a situation where i had to choose between a mature drinker who's over 0.08 and has driving experience vs. someone sober who just got their license id take the mature "drunk" driver.

If the government wants to effectively control drinking and driving then they should just ban drinking and driving all together and develop special licensing for those that want to drink and test them based on their tolerance levels, rather than generalize and say anyone over 0.08 is drunk, that's just bs.
